  1. Emm

Thanks Janet - I am back! Had so much going on over Christmas and then forgot my User Name and Password... doh! Have done LOTS of reading since then and loads more on my Wish List!

  2. I finished reading this last night and I absolutely loved it
  3. Martina Cole uses "and they were legion" not only in all of her books but also several times in some chapters! As in "he had his faults, and they were legion"...
  4. I've searched through this whole thread to see if anyone mentioned this book; i found it very disturbing, especially as you read child abuse storylines in the paper like this all the time...
  5. Usually 2... one "upstairs" book for bedtime & bathroom reading and one "downstairs" book for lunchtimes at work and for when hubby is on the PS3! Upstairs book is usually something i've read before and is generally quite light and fluffy.. I like a bit of chick-lit in the bath My new books are always reserved as "downstairs" books. Am I really weird LOL?
  6. Have just started The Girl Who Played With Fire and I love it already! The line "she ran out of patience and hit him over the head with a brick" perfectly sums up the Lisbeth we came to know and love in the first book... Can't wait to get home to read more
  7. I finished reading this last night after only picking it up the night before - I don't know if I rattled through it so fast because it was so short (a mere 216 pages - half the length I usually even consider!) or because I had The Girl Who Played with Fire waiting for me on the bookshelf… Whilst I found the book quite easy to read, I felt that the book wasn't long enough to really delve into the story, or to flesh out the characters and issues as I would have liked. As others have commented, I would have preferred the story to be written from both perspectives, as I didn't feel any sympathy for Hanna, only the adulation from a young boy struggling with his own guilt. After reading a lot of excellent books this year, particularly translations, I was disappointed that this won't be one that I will be recommending to friends and family.
  8. Despite hardly every crying at films (except Moulin Rouge which gets me every time...), and not even shedding a tear at my wedding, there are three books which have made me howl. In order of the amount of tears shed: 3) Goodnight, Beautiful - Dorothy Koomson (more of a lump in the throat) 2) Pay It Forward - Catherine Ryan Hyde (On a train... very embarrassing) 1) My Sister's Keeper - Jodi Picoult (Cried inconsolably for hours...)
  9. I read Marshmallows for Breakfast a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, then I bought Goodnight, Beautiful at a service station WH Smiths last year whilst driving up to Scotland. Omigod, it made me cry so much (although not as much as My Sister's Keeper... I was inconsolable for hours after that one!) Bought her other 3 books to take on honeymoon with me in January, I enjoyed My Best Friends Girl, but was disappointed with both the Chocolate Run and The Cupid Effect...
  10. I've just finished this book and it was a book that I didn't want to end - hence me putting in my order for the next book in the series the moment I finished! I thought Lisbeth Salander was a fantastic main character and it makes a chance for a book to have such a vulnerable heroine. If the new book comes tomorrow morning I'm taking it to the V Festival with me
  11. Wow, thank you everyone!! My Amazon wish list has increased tenfold in the past 2 days... I guess everyone will know what to buy for my birthday
  12. Much to hubby's dismay, I insist on keeping every book I read... however it means that my friends always know where to come when they need a good book or two for their holiday! I also re-read a large proportion of the books if I enjoyed them first time round, especially when I'm "between" new books like right now!
  13. I don't usually give up on books but then again I tend to buy books that I think I'll enjoy in the first place! However, I had to make an exception for Mr Toppitt by Charles Elton... I tried to persevere but I found it to be a disappointment and kept waiting for a story to evolve which never did...
  14. Hi all, I'm Emmalene, 31 years old and from sunny Birmingham. Stumbled on this site whilst trying to find what to read next and was viewing posts as a guest well into the wee small hours last night!! Fave 5 books of the year so far: 1) A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini 2) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larrsson 3) The Shadow Of The Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon 4) The Book Thief - Markus Zusak 5) The Time Travelers Wife - Audrey Niffeneger Hmm - a lot of foreign authors there! Have been trying out new books and authors this year after years of reading chick lit - but I still like to settle myself down with a large bar of Galaxy and a Jane Green/Louise Bagshawe/Marian Keyes et al every so often! Always have at least two books on the go at any one time, have run out of new books at the moment so am re-reading Angels & Demons by Dan Brown and Behaving Badly by Isabel Wolff whilst I'm waiting for my next package from Amazon to drop through the door! Any recommendations would be most appreciated!! Looking forward to getting to know you all, Emm
