  1. sorry for bumping this old thread up, but I just finished reading this, and I was ridiculously disappointed with the ending. (and I'm talking really REALLY gutted.) Am I the only one, or does anyone else think that it should have ended differently? Or maybe it's just the romantic in me talking.
  2. I don't know if it's considered travel writing, but I really liked Peter Mayle's Year in Provence (and the whole series). I find myself smiling and laughing to myself when I was reading it.
  3. Enid Blyton was spectacular. I loved her Faraway Tree series, Mr Meddle, and her mysteries. I'm 25 and I found myself re-reading the Enchanted Wood last week, that's how good it is. Anne of Green Gables and the subsequent books were pretty good too, though I don't think it's really a children's book. Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, I think those were pretty staple as well.
  4. I keep all of my books, only reason why my books are missing is if somebody 'borrows' them from me and conveniently forgot to return.
  5. Hi! I'm from Singapore too! So nice to see someone from my part of the world around here
  6. Enid Blyton is probably my favourite author of all times. I loved the Faraway Tree series, Secret Seven, Five Find-Outers (and dog) and St Clair's (I think the heroine was called Darrell, and her best friend was Sally). Oooh, the circus ones were good too, oh and the Barney mysteries! So's the Willow Farm series, Amelia Jane, Mr Meddle, wishing chair... And those short stories! I love all her books, as you can probably guess from that However, one of my strongest memories was actually from reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. I think I was 9 or 10 at that time, and there was a copy of Dracula (probably my Mum's), and I read the entire thing. I was horribly afraid of the dark when I was young, and the book didn't help. I was SO SCARED, but for some strange reason I couldn't stop reading. I finished the book, scared myself witless, and I actually buried the book in the storeroom, beneath boxes, because I thought that that might actually help, you know, in case Dracula comes alive from the book, at least he'll be stuck in the storeroom, haha. I remember being especially frightened of inviting people into my house for a very long period of time
  7. I loved it, although I do find the writing a little immature at times. I guess the allure of the book is due more to Edward than the storyline itself. The poll was telling though, only 1 person said that he/she hated the series after reading it; most people who actually read the series loved it! Since an overwhelming 87.1% of those who've read the series and loved it (this is making me sound really geeky), I conclude that you have to read them to love them.
  8. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible - 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte 8 1984 - George Orwell 9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman 10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens 11 Little Women - Louisa M Alcott 12 Tess of the D
  9. "You were curious." I stared at her, aghast. "A little," I conceded. "But it's not my concern, Mrs Bell. I shouldn't have touched it." Isabel Wolff - A Vintage Affair

    Hi!

Hi everyone! It's really exciting to see so many replies, I'm sure I'll have lots of fun here!
  11. the book was hard to read in the beginning, but it draws you soon after. It is one of my favourite books, I think perhaps one of the most powerful love stories. I didn't like Cathy though, I would have never left Heathcliff, even though I could empathise with her feelings for doing so. It is a good book, made me cry at a few places.

    Hi!

Hi everyone! I'm Prue and I'm from Singapore. I have 2 great loves - books and music, and I basically spend most of my money on these 2. I love mysteries, I'll basically read anything that's in front of me, though I don't really like to read science fiction; I've recently begun to enjoy war stories however, even though I haven't read a lot of them. There's also a huge pile of classics on my table yet to be read... Anyway, I don't really do forums and all so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say, but I'm sure I'll have lots of fun!
