  1. The Harry Potter books are pure comfort for me. I also like murder mysteries, especially those by Georgette Heyar and Elizabeth Peters. Isn't it kinda weird, though, that so many people find murder mysteries comforting?
  2. I'm about halfway through The Reader. Those of you who are taking part in October's reading circle: you're in for a treat.
  3. Thanks for your reply. Shame that the channel isn't used. Oh, well.

  4. Hey, I was just having a look at the irc channel here, and I noticed you are the op. Couple of questions if you don't mind?

Is that channel ever used? If so, when is a good time?

Can I use my own chat client? If so, could you provide the server and room names?

    Ta muchly!

  5. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day! :balloons:

  6. The book is "one big metaphor", yes, but I think it's up to the reader to decide which version of the story to believe. There is no right or wrong interpretation.
  7. When I was fifteen, I got hepatitis. The Reader - Bernard Schlink
  8. I just started The Reader for October's reading circle. Loving it, so far.
  9. That made me smile, Chrissy. We're so close to our books, aren't we; what better way to be reminded of a friend.
  10. You're welcome! Did you have a nice time?

  11. The woman bore a scorch mark from her chin to her brow. Enna Burning - Shannon Hale
  12. Whut? Really? I didn't see that. I loved Oryx and Crake, and considering the ending, a sequel would be veeeeery interesting.
  13. Happy Birthday, fellow Scotswoman! Hope you have a fantastic day!

  14. Oooooh, those titles sound intriguing! *runs off to investigate*
  15. I agree with the majority here, when I say "TBR", what I really mean is "the unread books currently on my shelves". I wouldn't include books I don't physically own in this. With regards to wish-lists, oh, I've got you all beat. Wish-list, pffft. Wish DATABASE, is what I have. Which I can sync with my phone and refer to when I go book-shopping. Or, I would, if I ever remembered.
  16. You should borrow them soon. Those are some of the best books I've ever read! I've read the first of Shannon Hale's Bayern series, and I would recommend it. It's a quirky re-telling of The Goose Girl by the Brothers Grimm. Hale does a good job of retaining the feel of the original story, while fleshing out the characters and story. Some strong female characters in this story, which is nice. I don't know how good the next two in the series are, as I haven't read them. I don't think they're based on any fairy tales; it's my impression that Hale took her cue from The Goose Girl and kind of ran with that.
  17. No. I don't make the decision to abandon a book very easily, but once I do, there's no going back. I might set a book aside for a while, if it's very long, and read something else in the meantime. But once I've truly given up on a book, it's bound for the charity-shop.
  18. That's exactly what I did, when I read it! I was just not ready to let it go.
  19. Just read the post on the health care debate on your blog. Not being American, I'm sort of unwilling to comment on this issue (I feel it's not really my business, yet I totally agree with you )

What I will say: you are very, very well spoken. Go, you.

  20. You're welcome! It's so cute, makes me smile everytime I see it!

  21. I'm so ambivalent about Delia. I find her utterly patronising, to the point where I refuse to watch her on TV. She's always saying things like "cover the dough with a clean tea-towel". What does she think I'm going to cover it with? Probably still getting the book, though.
  22. I lend books with the attitude that I might never see them again. So, most people I know would be quite welcome to an old paperback, but not my hardbacks, let alone my Folio editions. As far as borrowing books are concerned, well. At the moment I'm clearing out our home office, and let's just say that I found some library books. They were, um, "a bit" overdue. Yes, let's just leave it at "a bit".
  23. May in Ayemenem is a hot, brooding month. The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
