  1. It's set in the 1980's with Brian off to university while trying to keep his non-academic friends at home. Amazingly cringeworthy, I actually had to put the book down on several occasions because it made me squirm. Anybody who wasn't the cool kid at school will emphasise with him Sorry abut the short review :-) ...Oh and a brilliant ending
  2. I finished reading this a couple of weeks ago and found it really good. Usually i am not one for the whole spaceships thing, but I really enjoyed it. This is how amazon describes it: "Wealth ... or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are preprogrammed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. Some came back with discoveries which made their intrepid pilots rich; others returned with their remains barely identifiable. It was the ultimate game of Russian roulette, but in this resource-starved future there was no shortage of desperate volunteers." Highly recommended!!! I am about to start "do androids dream of sheep"
  3. just finished reading this, really really funny. I would Recommend it to anybody. It actually made me laugh out loud.
  4. Lestat the vampire. Living in a tower, Paris
  5. I went through a period of reading loads of kings books, I love his books of short stories and I thought Misery and insomnia were brilliant. I also liked the Dark Tower novels, although i have only read the first couple. I think they tie into most of his other books.
  6. I read this a little while back and thought it was OK. I knew the plot beforehand as it has been remade millions of times. Weirdly Mr Hyde's first name is "Edward", I didn't expect him to have a first name I have to agree that the Grave Robbers story was a lot scarier. There must have been something in the air around that time what with Stevenson, Wilde, Stoker, Doyle all knowing each other
  7. I have found this great bookshop in Cheltenham, It's a Redcross charity bookstore on the Bath Road next to the Co-op. Loads of books and really really cheap. I have just picked up Anne Rice
  8. My favorite is "The Canterville Ghost", really funny. It was the first one I read and got me into his plays and then Dorian Gray. I think i am going to have to go back over them again :-)
  9. Hi I have read the first two of these a little while back and i thought they were brilliant (being a fan of Wilde and Conan Doyle). Brandreth came to Cheltenham for the Literary Festival last year and it was really good to hear him speak about them both and the stories surrounding them. He did say that he had signed up for a few more books so looks like lots more to come. The latest one "Dead mans smile" is out now, so can't wait to read that.
  10. OK, it was not that bad. I just thought it would be scarier than it was. I think Seth Grahame-Smith is writing more though, Abraham Lincoln – Vampire Hunter (sounds like fun). I shall dust off the bat just in case
  11. Hey, I think I would be OK... More of a Shaun of the Dead style, hole up in a pub and wait it out.
  12. There have been a few. Misery, 1984, The Millennium People, We need to talk about Kevin... there are loads of books that are quite disturbing ...but the one I'm not going near is "Being Jordan" by Katie Price. brrrrrrr gives me nightmares just thinking about it.
  13. I have just finished reading this and loved it. It is so sad at the end with nobody showing up for the funeral. Poor tragic Gatsby.
  14. I read this a little while back, it was not as good as I thought it would be. Pretty poor really. Sorry
