  1. I am! And dear goodness, please do NOT worry about starting ATSS... Take your time, start it when you can, and don't fret. I won't mind if you don't get to it until 6 months from now, I swear! I'm not in any rush here
  2. I'm about 3/4 through "Year of Wonders" that CaliLily sent through the US book ring. It's taking me a while because work has been super intense, but it's a great read and I'm enjoying it!
  3. Started "Project Jennifer" by Jill Amy Rosenblatt last night for my upcoming book club pick.. Had to read quickly since the meeting is Wednesday, so I just finished it! Will start "Year of Wonders" soon.
  4. Hi there!

I had some time before work so went ahead and started the thread for ATSS .. You can reply whenever you want so you can get your hands on it first, and hopefully the ring will follow from there :) I did specify that it was for the US book ring in the thread title, to avoid confusion.

If you want to post your Year of Wonders book in a thread as well, I thought it'd be less confusing than coming from me.. That way it's clear that it's your book and it will eventually make its way back to its rightful owner. :)

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you need me to fix anything in my first thread.. Going to be a bit trial and error for me, I'm sure. :) But exciting!!

(sorry if this a double msg for you -- The PM function wouldn't work for me for some reason!)

  5. At the used bookstore today, picked up: Patricia Cornwell - All That Remains Richard Montanari - Merciless We Need to Talk about Kevin - Lionel Shriver (would be a re-read) and Raja got one too.. forgot what that one was. Poor soul will probably take a year to pick it up, but for $1, whatever! We got all 4 books for $4.18! My excitement waned slightly when I got home and realized the Montanari book is also called "Broken Angels" and I've already read it. Ah, well... if anyone shows interest in participating in a US book ring, I'll offer it up there, as well as my copy of WNTTAK since I've read it and I just bought it so I'd have my own copy in case Raja ever wants to read it.
  6. I kinda like the song! (Don't hate....)
  7. Let me know how you fare with it if you think about it.. Post back here with some thoughts once you're into it. I have it sitting on my nightstand and have been going back and forth just like you.
  8. You may could try "Shutter Island".. I haven't read the book, just recently saw the movie, but it has a bit of spooki-ness to it. Or I just checked one out called "The Little Stranger" by Sarah Waters that's supposed to be pretty spooky.
  9. Ok, sounds good! Tell them to leave me a message on my wall or send me a PM if they're interested. :) Then you can join in when you have a few bucks to spare! Hope you're doing well and looking forward to spring.. almost here..!

  10. The intro talks about some of the authors influenced by the case.. Very interesting! I'm excited to read this one!
  11. Thanks, Frankie! Ask me in about a week and I bet I'll have an update for ya on my thoughts.
  12. Hi there! (Happy late birthday is in order, I see, by the way :) )

Just dropping in to let you know I got my hands on my first Erica Spindler book (Copycat.. the only one the Center for Fiction here had), and LOVED it. Both you and Charm had rec'd me to her, so thanks to you guys! I'll definitely be trying some of her others.. was a great read. :)

  13. Wanted to let you know I got my hands on my first Erica Spindler book.. loved it! I read "Copycat".. the only one the Center for Fiction here had in. :) I will DEFINITELY read some of her others soon.. especially the one you recommended for me first! Off to tell Lexie the same thing.. she said she loved her as well and seconded your nom. :)

  14. I feel blue. I LOVE the sound of this book.. LOVED her first book.. but have now tried this book twice and just keep getting stuck. I think it has something to do with the swapping of the perspectives and that making it a tough 'pick up, put down' book maybe? I so wish I could do it.. but I just couldn't make myself go on after getting stuck around the same spot (about 120 pages) twice. *heavy sigh* ... Maybe I'll give it one more go in a couple of years when I have a really large span of time to read.. maybe on a super long flight or something. Glad most of you enjoyed it!
  15. Hi Sarah!

Sooo... I wanted to see if you still have any interest in starting up a US book ring? I'm back now and have quite a few books I could add in to the mix. If you're interested, I'm volunteering to help you with it and we can make a go of it together, team-style. :) Lemme know, chica! xoxo

  16. A Dangerous Fortune (Ken Follett) It's so simple, but so mysterious and ominous sounding.. I just knew there would be scandals and secrets between the two covers!
  17. I picked this up from the Center for Fiction the other day.. not sure if I'll really give it a go or not though, mainly because I want to read The Suspicions of Mr Whicher first. I picked the Sarah Waters book up and thought it looked okay from the blurb, but just didn't feel too positive... I definitely don't want a slow build, so maybe it's not best for me right now.
  18. I've read these.. really liked the first 2, really disliked the 3rd (I'm in the minority though.. Give it a shot!)
  19. I think one of the answers to this 'conundrum' kicking off this thread is actually a pretty easy one... Reading is less popular with some people simply because they just don't find the same excitement in reading books. If you don't get that 'spark-y' feeling by thinking about curling up with a good book, reading a book of average size can be pretty daunting (not in a scary way.. it's just a lot of time to invest in something that may or may not light you up every day or even every week). My husband is the perfect example.. He went to an IB school for high school that was very competitive to enter, has an MBA from one of the top 10 business schools in the US, and works in strategy in NYC for one of the largest banks in the world, so while he's obviously doing ok on the intelligence scale, books just aren't his thing. He's read 3 or 4 books that have really stuck with him (the most recent being "Pillars of the Earth") and during which he TRULY enjoyed the reading process.. but he just doesn't get the same *feeling* I get when I think of books. I'd venture to say you feel the same way about movies he feels about books: you probably don't think movies never have ANYTHING to offer, and you probably have a few movies that you REALLY felt a connection with, but overall... meh.. you could take or leave most of them because you don't feel this EXCITEMENT when you think of curling up in front of a good movie. I say... to each his own. At the end of the day, for most people, books and movies are hobbies for people, and that's that. You can pick whichever speaks to you more, without looking down on others that chose a different hobby or form of entertainment.
  20. Just starting The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale today.
  21. Nice deal you got yourself there, Shin! I'm giving up (for the second time) on Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden. This story just moves too slowly for me and it's difficult as a stop-start book since it switches from different perspectives of both characters AND time.. Too much confusion if you don't have large chunks of time to read, which I don't!
  22. Haha!! :D DEFINITELY were the days! I needed her to focus on more off-topic things.. no amount of distraction would do it, though. ;) You guys were too strong for me.

  23. Hi there Kate!! Glad you found us.. you'll have plenty of people to chat about Austen with.
  24. Hi and welcome!! Glad you found us during your search.
  25. That's the most inefficient system ever. I go to our library here a lot.. Probably once or twice a week. Sometimes I request books in advance, other times I just browse. I can usually get my hands on just about anything since NYC's library system is really extensive.
