  1. It's definitely on the Rory Gilmore challenge, it's how I chose it It has great reviews too, so I think it was a good choice from the list. The list has always scared me a bit with some of the reads, I can just see they're not my style! I haven't read Moonglow, I'll have to add it to the TBR list.
  2. "Knots & Crosses" by Ian Rankin Goodreads Description: And in Edinburgh, of all places, I mean, you never think of that sort of thing happening in Edinburgh, do you...? That sort of thing is the brutal abduction and murder of two young girls. And now a third is missing, presumably gone to the same sad end. Detective Sergeant John Rebus, smoking and drinking too much, his own young daughter spirited away south by his disenchanted wife, is one of the many policemen hunting the killer. And then the messages begin to arrive: knotted string and matchstick crosses - taunting Rebus with pieces of a puzzle only he can solve. Personal Note I've wanted to start reading the Inspector Rebus series for years and never got around to it. I do love a good crime novel and I really like Rebus as a character. It was also nice to read something based in Edinburgh, which isn't too far away from where I live. I like reading about familiar places and being able to have a good image of what is being described. Following this, I'm curious to see how Rebus will develop over the series. Rating: 5/5
  3. I finished Knots & Crosses by Ian Ranking, always love reading a good crime book. I've now started The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon; it took me a bit to really get into it but I think I'll like it a lot.
  4. I've decided there's no point in starting a new topic for 2017 as I never updated the 2016 enough. I'll continue updating this one for 2017 too - as always, beginning of the year is full motivation! I'm going to try something new this year and decide on the books I want to read in advance for the month and hopefully tackle books from the two lists I'm slowly making my way through: Rory Gilmore and 1001 Books. January Books will hopefully be: 1. Knots and Crossed - Ian Rankin (finished) 2. The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay - Michael Chabon (Rory Gilmore + 1001 Books) 3. The Godfather - Mario Puzo (1001 Books) 4. Making It Up As I Go Along - Marian Keyes (Kindle)
  5. I finished Fangirl over the weekend, such a lovely read. Even though I can't say I got too invested in the fan fiction appearing in the book, as someone who reads a lot of fan fiction, it's nice to read a book that puts it at the centre and doesn't mock it.
  6. I finished Fangirl and I'm now reading 1984. I have a vague recollection of reading it before many years ago but I'm not certain so I've had it on my TBR list for a long time. I'm really enjoying it so far.
  7. That was a very ambitious plan Enjoy your new books! I enjoyed Eleanor & Park, it was sweet I didn't even realise it was the same author until after I started the book. I'm thinking of getting a Paperwhite, I have a very old version of Kindle. Not that it's not working...but Paperwhite looks great! --- I started listening to American Psycho yesterday while I was doing things around the house, I'm now about 5 hours in.
  8. I'm reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, I wanted an easy read; also not often fan fiction appears in a novel at the centre of it.
  9. Interesting! I just felt at times I wanted the plot to move along a bit; maybe at some point I'll give the other published version a try, see if I get the same feeling.
  10. I read it many, many years ago so can't remember it very well, but I do remember enjoying Diary of a Short-Sighted Adolescent (I should probably give it a re-read). I had a teacher who loved Eliade so thankfully in school it was great studying the mandatory reads.
  11. The Girl in the Photograph sounds interesting, it's now added to my TBR list!
  12. I think the originally published version probably wouldn't have had the issue; I've also read plenty of reviews that didn't have an issue with how long it was, so it's probably just a personal issue!
  13. I'm just starting The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna, it was a random pick from the library.
  14. That's a lot of reading done yesterday! Glad you enjoyed it I ended up really enjoying American Gods despite a very slow start, I definitely recommend it. I also finished Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night so another about 250 pages. Nothing compared to your amount of reading but I'd been in a complete no-read phase so this weekend has been so great, just what I needed.
  15. "American Gods" - Neil Gaiman Goodreads Description - Days before his release from prison, Shadow's wife, Laura, dies in a mysterious car crash. Numbly, he makes his way back home. On the plane, he encounters the enigmatic Mr Wednesday, who claims to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a profoundly strange journey across the heart of the USA, whilst all around them a storm of preternatural and epic proportions threatens to break. Scary, gripping and deeply unsettling, American Gods takes a long, hard look into the soul of America. You'll be surprised by what - and who - it finds there... Personal Note First, I accidentally started reading the Author's Preferred Text which is significantly longer. Overall I enjoyed this book a lot although it did take me a while to get into it. I liked Shadow as a character and I loved all the twists and turns especially in the later parts of the book. I also loved reading about all the gods and mythology. One of the very few things I didn't like - a couple of the chapters felt random, I don't understand how they link in with the rest of the book. I definitely recommend the book, though maybe the initially published text? I found the author's preferred text slightly long-winded. Rating - 4/5
  16. A bit of Grantchester, always puts me in a good mood
  17. It took me a bit to get into it and I did find it a bit long, but overall so enjoyable and I loved all the mythology in it.
  18. Thank you! I really like the idea of being able to recommend listeners - it can be such a hit and miss sometimes. Knowing who to look for sounds very good. Good luck!
  19. Because of having a cold I didn't spend nearly as much time as I wanted reading...did sleep a lot! But I managed about 350 pages of American Gods so I finished it Next I want to finish Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night then move on to one of the library books.
  20. Looks like you have a very exciting birthday month, enjoy! I love book fairs, haven't been to one in a long time. I've wondered before about 7 Cups, I saw it a while ago. It looks quite good and I can imagine it gives good practice. --- I have a cold I can't seem to get rid of. I thought it was getting better, but it's worse and the coughing started last night too. Very glad I have nothing planned for the weekend except reading and studying.
  21. Happy reading! I'm just about to start, I might finally finish American Gods tonight. Then I have 3 library books for the weekend, hope to make my way through some of them.
  22. Just catching up on the last episode of National Treasure.
