  1. How true Ernie, there were some wonderful athletic achievements and lots of the athletes live off sponsorships (and their families). Such a disparity in the sports. It also riles me that Cricket is only shown on Sky (I don't have sky, only Freeview) so only get to see Test highlights on Ch. 5 for about half an hour. :irked:

I'm showing my age but I remember when we only had 4 Channels and they had time for every sport on TV and still managed to show all the soaps etc too. Seems worse now we have too many channels. I'll try not to miss the Athletics tonight on BBC3 Lol.

  2. Isn't it strange when you consider how bad we did in the world cup and what a bad example many of these footballers are that it was shown on all main tv channels, yet our Athletics team performed out of their skins recently and it's only on bbc2 or even bbc3.

  3. Just finished Unseen Academicals, very good! (review up soon).

Did anyone see Terry giving the Dimbleby Lecture this evening? I was still reading and missed it, but I intend to catch it on iPlayer at some point.

yes and glad i did. I've never read any of his books but am now definitely a fan of the man. I'm off to search on the forum now for his books, Discworld I think it was.

  4. I bought that from Walterstones just before Christmas, I was standing reading most of it in the shop, so I thought I better.

I couldn't decide who to give it to as a present, my 15 year old daughter, my 17 year old son, or my mother. In the end I kept it for myself.

What I got from it was that I think it would be a fun exercise to write 16 year old me a letter. Something like

Dear Ernie, when that guy from Paisley picks a fight with you, he's not joking, so HIT him first. And when your cousin comes with an idea about starting a sandwich business, tell him to take a run and jump. and learn Spanih, it'll be useful, etc etc.

  5. Perhaps the average age of members simply reflects the average age of people who are internet savvy.

it is a shame though that there aren't more members in certain age groups as they must have a wealth of experience and knowledge about books that many of us can only aspire to. Surely we must do all we can to encourage them onto this forum.

  6. There's no getting away from it, I read mainly non-fiction. It has to be a very good read for me to read fiction, but I have read fiction, will again, and have a fiction 'to read' list.

  7. CAULIFLOWER CHEESE

Someone gave me a cauliflower last weekend because it had some discoloration. I just cut of those bits and cooked the rest. Then I cooked some diced onion in a big pan, added a tin of mushrooms (drained), added a tin of chopped tomatoes. Made up a pkt cheese sauce and added it, added the cooked cauli. Finally grated cheese and in the oven to melt, LOVELY.

  8. I never saw the show but I do like Darren Brown.

In fact I'll make a psychic prediction now. In time when Darren has 'finished' with all the big stunts and has made a name for himself in the world, he'll turn his attention to developing products aimed at teaching people. After all, it is often said that we only use about 10% of our mind. Forget 'Brain Training', we're talking life changing psychological skills.

  9. I'm doing some research today from an old running book (non-fiction), it was published 26 years ago but the stuff in it is so relevant. The Complete Distance Runner by Bruce Tulloh

I had started reading a book written by a friend (his first) Pull Up A Sandbag by Jonathan Smiles (also non-fiction) but loaned it to another friend who's in hospital.

I still have a third book on the go though, One Hundred years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I read the first 50 pages but am going back to the start, it's that good.
