  1. i enjoyed reading this book, mainly because i thought sam was adorable as a character. at first i thought he sounded too young for his age, but then i realized at sixteen he was still a child. in spite of the things he was capable of doing (i.e., sex), he was just a naive boy. i remember thinking he didn't even know what he was doing - he had sex with alicia only because he was only curious. i even felt sorry for him since it was obvious his prime interest was skating and getting a girl pregnant sort of got in the way of that. the whizzing thing was a bit weird, but i got past that. while there isn't anything spectacular about this novel, i wouldn't consider it a worthless read. it's light-hearted, which is a nice change from the angst that typically permeates a novel for young adults. i also appreciate the way hornby could take a heavy topic like teen pregnancy and weave a story that neither trivializes it nor makes it the worst problem in the world.
  2. due to all the hype, i've been trying to read this book twice. i could never seem to get past the first chapter though, let alone read the entire series. i'm going to give it one last shot and then i'll stop trying forever. but i really want to get to the part where edward the vampire sparkles. long live sparkling vampires!! (still can't find the edit button, meh.)
  3. i mostly read books for children, so it's hard to choose. off the top of my head, i'll have to go with eleven by lauren myracle, the steps by rachel cohn, dave at night and ella enchanted by gail carson levine, the thief by megan whalen turner, the prydain chronicles by lloyd alexander, and the vivien leigh series by a couple of writers whose names i have yet to commit to memory. i can probably come up with several more titles if i were to read through the list of books that i've read (yes, i do keep that kind of lists). (where the heck is the edit button??) i just want to mention that while i liked the first book in the his dark materials by philip pullman, i can't say the same for the other two books. which reminds me: pullman wrote the scarecrow and his servant, which i found very cute and amusing. read it!
