  1. I watched the David Lean film along time ago and was fascinated by it, I've also read the book in my teens but I think I need to read it again. I can't quite make my mind up about the role of Miss Havisham, I thought she was a bit more frightening in the original film. She doesn't appear that way in the TV version. I liked Ray Winstone as Magwitch, I thought he was well cast. Overall I've really enjoyed it, I think they captured the mood of the book quite well.
  2. I cried at Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden, well actually I sobbed. My baby boy was only 3 wks old so I blame the hormones.
  3. Just finished The Thirteenth Tale, really enjoyed this too. Great story and as usual I didn't figure out the twist until near the end of the book.
  4. I've just read the reviews on amazon, sounds intriguing, another one to add to my list, thanks.
  5. Thanks for those recommendations, I'll check those out. I've just finished The Novel in the Viola and thoroughly enjoyed it so I need a new read.
  6. Just to update, I've started reading The Savage Garden as it's been on my shelf for nearly two years but today I've also bought The Winter Ghosts (Kate Mosse)and The Novel in the Viola.
  7. Thanks for the recommendations. I've not read Rebecca, I keep meaning to expand some of the classics. I have read and enjoyed Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I'll try Natasha Solomons novel too, I've not come across that before. I'm not sure what my favourite style is. I do like history and in particular the Tudor period so have exhausted all the Philippa Gregory ones of that period, I have also enjoyed books relating to witchcraft - Hiding from the Light, Barbara Erskine, and a book about The Witchfinder General but I can't remember the author. I've enjoyed all the Kate Morton novel, I like the to and fro between present day and the past. I suppose I've got lots of Barbara Erskine to get through as I've only read about three. For easy reading I do enjoy Maeve Binchy.
  8. I'm coming to the end of the last Kate Morton novel and I'm looking for a similar author to try. I've read the majority of the Philippa Gregory novels, enjoyed a couple of Barbara Erskine, Jodi Picoult, also Atonement,Bird Song and Labyrinth . I'm not into chick lit books though. Any suggestions?
  9. Thank you for the warm welcome everybody!
  10. I registered here quite a while ago but have only just posted my 1st reply! I'm a 30 something mum of two. I love reading but haven't had the time to read much over recent years but I hope to rectify that. I did read quite a few book in September last year when I had a lengthy stay in hospital visiting due my son who was in the special care baby unit (he's fine now, but was in for just over a month). I read Philippa Gregory - The Other Queen, Jodi Picoult's The Pact and My Sister's Keeper, and Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden. I don't really have a genre, I'll try most things but Philippa Gregory (Tudor/Plantagenet series) are a favourite. I do tend to read mainly female authors, I'm not sure why. I did try a few of the classics, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights which I enjoyed too. I love forward to reading the posts and book recommendations on this forum.
  11. I finished The White Queen last week and really enjoyed it. I do love Philippa Gregory and the Tudor history anyway but my knowledge of the War of the Roses was sketchy. I think this has given me the incentive to do a bit more background reading into Richard III, the book certainly offers a different opinion on him.
