Know how you feel.  I have found a Kindle useful though - great for keeping in bag and reading in odd places, whilst travelling, after dark in bed (I have a Paperwhite, so the light doesn't disturb OH's slumbers!) etc.

It would be great for travels, I agree! But I don't think I travel enough for a Kindle :D

I read lots of new books on Kindle U. and found some great, new (to me ) authors. :D It`s a fab way to try out books. :)

I'm sure it is! :)  BF recently entertained the idea of me getting a Kindle but I do like the feel of a physical book in my hands...

Mount TBR ( ) has climbed steadily. :hide:  I haven`t dared do a count this year, for fear that it`s now above 900.

Yes, best to stop counting! :D Just keep on reading and writing reviews and such lovely things :D

Ooh whoops! My bad! I totally misunderstood. It sounds great anyway! :D

I think I said it was ages since I read the book and you inserted _first_ between I and Read    Oh well!!

I'm a bit late to this but JusRol puff pastry is vegan. I use it frequently as making puff pastry is not one of my better skills :)

Thanks for the tip! :) I'm not sure if we have that over here in Finland, but I'll keep an eye out! :)

Quite right, my mistake!  The film was called The Handmaiden, not The Handmaid's Tale!  It came out last year - I saw it at the Leeds International Film Festival last autumn.  Superb film, thoroughly recommended.

Well that's an easily made mistake, innit! :) (I mean, I can see how you made it!)

In addition, whilst I really enjoy the meetings and the discussions, I'm sort of 'resenting' (too strong a word, but can't think of one more precise) being 'required' to read certain books, especially when I know they're the sort of book that I have actually avoided reading. --  I think, hope, it's just a phase, although there are one or two coming up that seem to be carrying on the recent trend!

How long has this phase lasted? Have any of your own suggestions been chosen to be read? I hope it really is just a phase, you wouldn't want to have to read a book you don't particularly want to time after time.

This one, about which I had no preconceived ideas beyond what I had read in the blurb, was better than most recently - indeed if anything it surprised on the upside - but some of the books that have been lined up have really annoyed me - not least the 'bestsellers' that I really didn't rate at all, and knew within the first few pages (I'm become deeply suspicious of bestsellers!).

Well it pleases me to hear that this was better than you expected! :D Good luck with the upcoming novels!!

Yes, I mean you. :) The list I was referring to was your TBR list although all your lists are good. When are you going to get around to East of Eden by Steinbeck?

Well thank you for the compliment! :smile2: I don't know about East of Eden. I do love the books I've read by Steinbeck, but my copy of EoE is not a very tidy and nice one, I think it's putting me off reading the book. I bought it as second-hand from a library collection. I shouldn't hold it against the novel, though! I'll get to it at some point.

I see where you also have The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter on your list of books bought. You may want to consider holding off on reading it until you read her previous books. I am on a roll of reading Karin Slaughter right now. Actually, I have The Good Daughter on hold at the library as I fly through her earlier books.

Hm, is The Good Daughter not a standalone novel? In any case, I don't think the book's very high on my current priority list. I have a lot of non-fiction stuff I want to get to at the moment.

Glad to see you're still plowing through Slaughter's novels and enjoying them! :smile2:

However my little deadline seems to be working well, and I've taken to reading downstairs occasionally. I read in the garden last night (it was lovely - it's really hot here at the moment, almost unbearably so - but it's lovely at dusk). Anyway, I'm well on track with my 100 pages a week goal so, so far so good!!

That's great! :smile2: It's really hot in here, too, which I think is actually a great excuse to be lazy about other things and focus on reading :D It's too hot to do anything else! Reading outside sounds really nice :smile2: I've not done it yet this summer, I need to jump in the bandwagon! :D

Well I'm smashing my weekly target so far. I'm on page 318 now and I read 150 pages last week. I'm really enjoying it. I think maybe I needed a bit of momentum to get me going. Reading 5 pages here and there is no way to get into a book. The hot weather and a bit of insomnia has probably helped too.

Great job! :)  I agree about you probably needing a bit of momentum. Once you get going, you want to read more and more! :)

  9. Great statistics! :smile2: What caught my attention was that you read more books by female authors than male authors! :)  I did the same one year and some commented on it, saying they read more male authors than female. I thought it was interesting!

Going by your ratings, you've mostly enjoyed the books you've read, which is great going!! :smile2:

Happy reading for the rest of 2018!

She's definitely very readable :)! I should be getting my copy of Surprise Me this week :). I hope you can read more in English soon too :smile2:.

Did you get your copy already? I'm sure you have, and I probably will know as much when I get around to reading your thread, as I'm doing rounds today :D  I hope you will like it!!

Haven't done any reading in English yet, but I'm not too worried. I read an interesting book on depression by a Finnish author, and now I'm reading a Finnish novel so obviously I needed to read them in Finnish as they've not been translated into English :D

I hope you enjoy all of them :D. I have a few of the Little Vampire books on my TBR (in Dutch) which I bought at a library sale, as well as Jemima J, Sharp Objects and Miss Pegegrine's.

I love the Little Vampire books! I used to read them when I was a kid, and I still do, every now and then   Jemima J is good, too and Sharp Objects I thought was riveting! :smile2:

Nope, just done a 3-month Kindle Unlimited thingy, so haven`t had an `actual` book in my little paws for a while now. Some books got damaged in the 2018 Diningroom Burst Pipe Catastrophe, so there might be a forced book cull. :(

The DBPC sounds awful, What horrible crap to have to go through! :(  Did you at least read your Kindle TBR or did you go for new books :D Has Mount TBR reduced at all? :D

I love the sound of The Widow! I've added it to my wish list. Very promising if you still rated it highly as a re-read!

It wasn't a re-read I'm afraid! It was a new to me -read. Very good, though, I hope you will still like it if you decide to read it!

It might have been me? At least, I wrote a review on it a while ago when I had read it :). Maybe you learned of it somewhere else though, that's also possible!

It's very possible! :)  I can't remember! I went back to see when you reviewed the book and it was back in 2016. The book was on my 2016 wishlist so it may have gotten on it because of your review! :)

What with all the movement back and forth of my downstairs books due to the pipes leaking, I have no idea which pile the Vera Dietz book is in now, or many of my other books. It`s entirely possible that I`ll find it soon. Erm, also it`s entirely possible it`ll turn up two years from now. ;)

I'm sorry about the bloody pipes!! :(  No hurries or worries re: the Vera Dietz book, you get to it when you do. You sure have enough other books to read in the meantime! :D

I don't know a lot about it I'm afraid. I haven't seen the TV series myself, but my grandmother has mentioned it to me, she liked it a lot I think. I'm not 100% sure if she's read the original book, but I think she has read it and liked it. I haven't read either book, but I have read a different book and a novella by Barbara Delinsky and liked them both.

Have you ever thought about reading the book? :)

On 4.6.2018 at 2:54 PM, Madeleine said:

I very vaguely remember the TV series - in black and white!

When did it air? My Mum probably watched it. Maybe. I would think! It would be so much fun to watch the show! :smile2:

My mojo's been fickle though, so I've not been able to re-read the first novel in the series yet. But I'm hoping to get to it and the sequels this summer! :)

  13. I see you bought a copy of Talking as Fast as I Can! I hope you will like it!! :D You will understand my signature once you've read a certain chapter :D

I also see you've bought Please Ignore Vera Dietz. It's been on my wishlist for a while. I don't know where I learned of the novel but I hope to read it some day. I hope you'll like it! I'm keeping my eyes open for your review, should you get to it sooner rather than later :D

  14. I've moved on to season 6 of GoT. Can't wait to watch more, but it'll have to wait till next weekend :(

I'm watching the third season of The Mindy Project. Loving all The Office cast members who are popping up :D

I'm also watching Elementary, I've started season 2.

For the first time in a while, there's nothing on TV that I'm watching regularly, so HBO and Netflix are my friends!

  15. I'm sorry to hear The Art of Racing in the Rain didn't grab you! I found it a superb novel, but I'm a massive dog enthusiast and that plays into the whole thing in a big way, I believe :D But I'm glad it wasn't a total waste. Group reads are difficult sometimes, as we might be in the mood for something very different than what a group has chosen for us to read.

  16. I've acquired some books, these are from May and June:

    Awareness by Anthony de Mello

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

The Little Vampire (omnibus) by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg

The Book of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric

Poket by Sakari Luoma (A book about Finnish bouncers. A very random topic :D )

The Secret of Happy Ever After by Lucy Dillon

Introverteissa on voimaa! by Sylvia Löhken (This is about introverts!)

Ilosia aikoja, mielensäpahoittaja by Tuomas Kyrö (from Dad!)

    Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

The Ballroom Class by Lucy Dillon

    Wedding Ring by Emilie Richards

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (I bought this Finnish paperback copy of the novel at a flea market. I own an English copy and a Finnish hardback, but I liked the look of this paperback so I wanted to buy it)

Emma by Jane Austen (A Finnish copy. I've been wanting to re-read Jane Austen lately but I don't think I could read her in English, not now. It would be too tricky for my scatter brain these days!)

    Jemima J by Jane Green

I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe

Feeling Good Together by David D. Burns

Last year I downloaded 44 books from the library to my kindle. Much less than previous years (but still quite a few that I didn't have to buy) :). most years I download at least 60+ books from the library. I am grateful for my kindle AND the library. :) It would be pretty expensive otherwise.

I'm late to respond, sorry. But 60+ books is a LOT! You're saving a big bunch of money :) And supporting your library system! :smile2:

I am currently #9 on the hold list (library has 8 copies) for "Robichaeux" a book by James Lee Burke, one of my favorite authors. I don't know whether to wait for it or start another book. I may pick one from Frankies list. Her list is tremendous.

Do you mean me? Which list are you referring to, I'm curious! :D

    26. Cop Town - Karin Slaughter - 8/10

    27. Last Breath - Karin Slaughter - 8/10

    28. Undone - Karin Slaughter - 8/10

All the Karin Slaughter books were good reads. If you have read any of her books these are typical hard hitting reads.

I've read Karin Slaughter's books, I can't remember how many. She is one of my most favorite authors in her genre. She does things I never see coming! I have quite a few of her book to be read, but I'm wondering if I should re-read the earlier novels in the series. I think Triptych is the favorite I've read by her. :)

I should get back to Jasper Fforde, too! I've only read The Eyre Affair, which was obviously brilliant. :smile2:
