  1. I'm an 18 year old male and I enjoy reading from the point of view of protagonists such as: Holden Caufield (Catcher in the Rye) Mark Renton (Trainspotting) Bernard Marx (Brave New World) ... I can't think of any more off the top of my head lol. I guess that the style that I enjoy is that of a disaffected, unruly scumbag who enjoys using cursing and colloquial terms in their language. I found that when I read these books I was sucked into the psyche of the narrator through the language used eg the Scottish colloquial terms used in Trainspotting.
  2. I read this a couple of months ago but I didn't realise there was a thread here about it. 1- Who was your favourite character and why? Richard Parker was my favourite character, the main reason being that there are only two main characters and Pi was annoying I found. 2- Was there a particular part you enjoyed/disliked more than the rest? I enjoyed the parts where Pi was learning to adapt to his new surroundings on the boat as he leaned about wildlife/put his existing knowledge to good use. I disliked the parts where he was explaining about how he chose his religions/philosophies on life. That part of the book just seemed too stupid to be taken seriously IMO. 3- Was this the first book you've read in this genre/by this author, has it encouraged you to read more? Yes, no. 4- Were there any parts/ideas you struggled with? The part about the island that he came across. I couldn;' figure out if it was just a big metaphor or if it really happened because it just seemed so surreal. 5- Overall, was reading the book an enjoyable experience? Yes, however it did get tedious at times. I disagree with you on your point about the world needing "less religious division" and how Pi's views reflect a healthy religious attitude. I just thought that he was an indecisive and immature person in his choice making and understanding of religion.
  3. "It was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking 13." - George Orwell, 1984 Classic.
  4. I just watched the second episode. Very tasty indeed. Things are starting to come together I think but I'm sure that as soon as that happens something completely unexpected will happen
  5. Tool is a great band but I find that I obsess over them for a couple of days and then go off them for weeks. MCR on the other hand are completely and utterly terrible in my opinion of course.
  6. During my free periods at school (about 13 hours a week) I sneak up to the library and find myself a quiet corner by the window. Apart from that, I read in my bed depending on how tired I am or how good the book is. Sometimes I could stay up unitl 3AM or so but other times I could just nod off instantly.
  7. Apart from school textbooks, all of my reading is fiction I just find it much better to "escape" from reality by reading something imaginative.
  8. I'm re-reading this book now and I have to day that I can find it much more bearable second time round. The main character is quite irritating because I find that he's such a hypocrite, calling everybody a "phony" when he himself is such a compulsive liar. As a lot of you have said, the personality of Holden can put you off the book. I can relate to the character at the same time though. I agree with a lot of his sentiments about the world and about people in general, although I wouldn't be as much as a misanthrope as he is. It is a very enjoyable read but you have to be in the right frame of mind to take the book in IMO.
  9. I watched the first episodes of season 4 the other night and I have to say that I'm impressed. I was expecting the series to get more and more complicated but I think that it is finally going in a positive direction.
  10. I like British sitcoms a lot for example: Peep Show, The Office, Extras, The IT Crowd, Nathan Barley etc. None of those shows have new series out at the minute so I am currently trying to get through all of the old Arrested Development and The Office US that I have downloaded. In terms of drama programmes, I watch Prison Break, even though I know it's rubbish I think I'll start watching the new series of LOST too.
  11. I am indeed quite a big Tolkien fan... the Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite novels, I've read it four or five times:mrgreen: I also like Ernest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck, Sue Townsend and JK Rowling (I'm ashamed to admit it though ) Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. I think I'll take my time in using the board by just lurking about for a few days before I do some major posting.
  12. Hi I just signed up. My name is Conor, I'm 18 and from Ireland. I like reading although the speed and level at which I read can vary from time to time. I read from a range of genres and I don't really have a favourite. I just like good books and try to read as many "classics" of literature as possible. I think that I may begin writing a novel soon so I'll keep you all up to date on that as it happens. I hope to get into some good discussions here about books and more. Apart from reading, I like heavy metal music, television and films. Feel free to ask any questions
