  1. I really enjoyed this book. It had a warmth about it and I thought it was a lovely story, if a tiny bit predictable. My only criticism was that I find the author a little wordy - she uses thirty words when five would do!
  2. This is the only Carole Matthews book I didn't enjoy. I read until the end, as I'd paid for the book, so wanted to know what happened. It's not that it was a 'fantasy' book, as I read one by Alexandra Potter and was able to suspend my disbelief. I think I just didn't like the characters enough. However, subsequent books are great, and she's back to her best.
  3. This was the second SK novel I read, the first being the initial Shopaholic book, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I like the 'voice' in which she writes and find her books very easy to read, with just the right amount of humour. I'd like to read it again, but realise I lent it to a friend several years ago and haven't seen it since!
  4. What a fabulous idea! Independent bookshops have to work very hard to keep a step ahead of their chainstore rivals, and this kind of one-to-one attention is such a good way to make the customer feel special. Hope you have a good experience!
  5. Interesting. I am having to fight to get the royalities I'm owed from my book's release - even with the whole amount turning up, I probably couldn't even buy a wendy house!!!
  6. Hi! Haven't spoken for a while, so just checking in to see how you're doing - hope you're well. x

  7. Thank goodness! I've just won a book and it's being sent to me this week. I can't wait.
  8. I would say that you tried to read it, but it wasn't your type of thing - this prevents the same thing happening again. Apologise for the delay in returning it, but say you've just come across it again.
  9. I love that people are so passionate about books on this site! Due to my health, I can't always get to the library - for the same reason, I wouldn't be able to get to the post office, which is why I don't use bookrings or swap sites. Plus, my budget is so low that even postage is a s-t-r-e-t-c-h! I've started re-reading things from my bookcase, and doing some online family tree research to occupy my mind. I've found that I have lots of Irish ancestry, so may read about Irish history online...
  10. Has anyone read any of these titles? I know I'm generalising, as I've only read two of these books (by the same author), but I hated them. I thought that they were badly written, repetitive, boring and predictable. I don't like to be negative about books, as I know how it feels for someone to say bad things about your work, but I would never pick up another book by the author, based on the LBD stories. I'm so glad I won these, as I would have felt cheated if I'd bought them! Harsh, but true.
  11. I was unable to get into Freya North's work. I received a couple of her books one Christmas from my mam, and I swapped them for something more readable. I can't put my finger on what the problem was...
  12. I can't believe it. I have no books to read. My budget (or lack of one) means that I can't buy, even second-hand. I haven't been able to get to the library, and I've just finished the last unread book I had in the house (Peter Kay's autobiography, incidentally). I'm already having withdrawal symptoms and wondering what I can re-read to pass the time. I've even been through my newly delivered catalogue twice, just so I have some pages to turn... Does anyone else ever get to this point, or do you always have a big TBR pile?
  13. I finished reading this book at the weekend, and really enjoyed it. As someone who is researching their family history, I found that I learned a little about what it may have been like for my family who lived at the time in which the book was set. There were other connections, as my ancestors were also from Ireland (although none of them rich ). I thought that the characters were beautifully written, and that the female lead was strong and endearing. As I said earlier, I found the chapters too lengthy, and I felt a little disappointed with the ending - to me, it felt rushed, but perhaps the intention is to have a sequel. If so, I'd definitely buy it.
  14. Yay! I now have a small TBR pile which consists of two Little Black Dress books which arrived this morning. My first competition wins this year! Great timing!
  15. Yes, I am freaky in many ways...but none that impact on my reading habits! Usually I buy my books, but a strict budget (and the fact that my friend closed her book shop) means that I have to rely on the library. Unfortunately, I can't always get myself to the local library, and although hubby tries to pick things out for me, it's not the same as selecting them myself. It's a terrible position to find myself in, so I'm reading my current book very slowly and savouring every word.
  16. If I get absorbed in a book and don't want to put it down, that's a sign of a good read to me. Characterisation also has to be believable and I have to feel emotionally involved in their lives, to an extent.
  17. Actually 33. Mentally 21. Physically 101.
  18. I have NO books in my pile. In fact that means I don't even have a pile! I'm currently reading 'Before the Storm', but after that, I will have to re-read unless I can get to the library. It's practically unheard of for me not to have books waiting to be read...
  19. Hi Tiger - thanks for popping along to my visitors' page. I think it's going to take me a little while to get used to these changes! Love your profile picture, by the way.

  20. I'm useless at reviewing books, which is a shame, as there is often a lot I'd like to say about them...
  21. Hi Kell! How is the heat treating you? Hope you're well, too. I might get the hang of this soon...after I've mastered Facebook!

  22. Hi - hope you're well! I'm still not my usual 79% but blame allergy season!!! Didn't even know about all the new features on here, despite popping in from time to time... x

  23. We read a wide variety of things, books and plays. If memory serves me correctly, I read these, among others (titles are correct but I may have confused the authors): An Inspector Calls (JB Priestly) The Machine Stops (EM Forster) Androcles and the Lion (GB Shaw) Midsummer Night's Dream and Richard III (Shakespeare) To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee) - my favourite. Kerri
  24. Did not like Brenda's attitude or the politics guy. I felt that they were both extremely rude. Glad they didn't win.
  25. I read the write-up about this in the Sky mag, and thought I might enjoy it. Unfortunately, I felt that it did not live up to the hype surrounding it. I, too, found the voice-over fairly irritating, and although it's likely I'll watch the remainder of the series (hubby enjoyed it), I wouldn't bother recording it if I was out.
