  1. I did the same thing. I think a lot of folk do Thats very impressive. Do you go back over it sometimes? Glad to have you here. Hope you enjoy!
  2. Well I finally started Dracula on Saturday and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is SO gripping. I think I'm on chapter 8. I can't wait to pick it up again hopefully tonight. Will be very interesting to compare with Carmilla.
  3. I finished the Hobbit and have come to the conclusion that I have never read it before after all. (At least not fully). From about half way through all the vague familiarity had gone and the ending was a complete surprise. I was convinced I had read it in my late teens and had the plot all mapped out in my head (which was totally different to the actual one!) I must have taken vague memories of the book (that was read to me aged about seven) and merged it with bits and pieces of the LOTR films. Ah well, the memory is a strange thing!! I have now started Dracula and I can hardly put it down. It is fantastic and I am so glad I am finally reading it. I have meant to do so for ages and am at last catching up a bit with reading circle books! I tried to get Anne of Green Gables from the library yeesterday but couldn't see it. They were about to close so I didn't have time to search/ask about it. I'll try again next weekend. I wonder if they have any online search/reserve facility...
  4. I've seen about the first dozen or so of these and have been really enjoying it. There seem to be less unanswered questions than Lost (which has started to annoy me)
  5. And I have Mine is probably The Canterbury Tales (in a modernised translation)
  6. I loved Wuthering Heights (I've only read it once, I wonder how it would stand up to a re-read) but I hated Heathcliffe character. I think that's one of the things that impressed me about the book, how much it made me get involved.
  7. Hi and welcome on board! The site is getting very international now
  8. For me it was Janet and John and I think I remember Peter and Jane books. Look Jane Look See the ball Run spot run
  9. Its the first thing that came into my head. I regret it now. I assumed Andrea would already be taken but I don't suppose it was.
  10. Welcome Eddie/Steve Why is your screen name Eddie?
  11. Just a few main characters yes, but sometimes too few can make a book a little claustrophobic. I think it depends on the book and how the characters are handled. The hobbit has 14 characters on a journey, Bilbo, Gandalf and 12 dwarves plus lotsa characters on the way. Its not too confusing because you can bundle all the dwarves together, and all the charcters they meet on the way are very minor and only in it for a short time. I did lose track of some of the minor characters in the picture of dorian gray though, all the ladies and gentlemen at the dinner parties.
  12. Hi LFS and welcome to the site. Wow 100 books is quite a challenge!! I am not the worlds fastest reader so I set myself a very loose goal of reading 25 books this year. If you want to aim high I suggest you pick some short ones LOL. Hmm I'll have a think and see if I can recommend anything. Don't forget to let us know how you get on with the books you do decide to try!
  13. I would quite like to try the dark materials books out of curiosity but I'm a bit put off by the anti-religious theme. I will probably read them at some point though.
  14. Thank you. I must have read it in my late teens and its amazing how much I've forgotten. It's almost like I'm reading it for the first time. I think it will go down as one of my all time favourites too.
  15. Well I must be enjoying the Hobbit because I was dreaming about it last night. I dreamt I was Bilbo Baggins
  16. I'd like to read OFOTCN. Read Dirk Gently years ago and absolutely loved it. A real page turner if I remember right. I'll probably read it again some day.
  17. Bought Knots and Crosses the other weekend. Have a friend who loves this author and have been meaning to try him for a while so will hopefully read this in the next few months.
  18. Hey welcome. Don't worry I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Nice to have you here. If you do get lost just yelp and one of us will come and find you
  19. Thoroughly enjoying the Hobbit, much more than I thought I would. I'd forgotten so much of it. Loads has happened already and I'm only a quarter in. Its a very dense adventure.
  20. Well I'm afraid I can't take the credit. I've never read them
  21. Ooh that sounds good. It might have to go on my TBR...
  22. I picked up the first one and wasn't too impressed and didn't get far. I'd be interested to read the later ones as they get more sophisticated as the series goes on, but I feel I should read the early ones first or the later ones won't make sense. Marketing genius to aim each book at a progressively higher age group but annoying because the early ones don't have as much appeal to me. (It may turn out I don't enjoy the later ones either but I'm curious)
  23. Hi Steffi, nice to meet you. I use to love ND when I was younger.
  24. I started the Hobbit last night. I read it years ago but wanted to prep myself for LOTR which I also intend to read at some point. Very enjoyable. I think i will have to overlap it with Dracula if I'm to keep up to date with the reading circles.
