  1. Hi Donna Its good to have you on board.
  2. The Man who was Thursday by G K Chesterton. A very unusual book, a kind of surreal spy thriller. It contains some excellent imagery. Its a wonderful book but very strange, mixed feelings about the ending too. I will definitely buy it to re-read one day.
  3. Oh is that by Susan Hinton? I read that a couple of years ago. It was really good.
  4. Just don't get any more!! Maybe someone here will agree to swap with you. I need to find out what mine is before I know whether I want to swap.
  5. Hehe PDR these are warning signs that you are a true addict. Maybe there is a way of cancelling?
  6. Wow some of them are really good aren't they. I like the first Dorian Gray too (row 1) And some of the Grimm tales covers.
  7. It was a great show. I'm sure it will be around for a while. The songs/dancing costumes/sets were all fantastic! I don't know if I'd read the book though. I LOVE the wizard of Oz and I had to grit my teeth a little at the twisting of the original story (Its all done in good fun but you know what I mean)
  8. Good question Yea me too! Signed up 5 mins ago. Sorry Ice cream, maybe the email was wrong? I got Selected Writings but it doesn't say who by. There were 4 or 5 with that title. One was by a 12th century nun!! If its the Thomas Aquinas I'd be interested in that. I'm starting to regret - I hope my book isn't too heavy!
  9. I imagine the Wilberforce book to be quite interesting actually and I don't begrudge them reading Harry Potter at all. I would have thought there are many other books represented there but that the poll just reflects the top few for simplicity sake.
  10. Whoa, I'm dreaming about vampires now! I was at a really exciting bit last night and my bf all of a sudden was having a crisis about some books he'd lost and kept talking to me about it, even after he'd realised where they were
  11. I go through reading deserts all the time (not since I have been here though yet). If I am struggling to read I simply have a break and don't try to force it. If you need some recommends for something half way between silly/heavy I am sure people here can help. I would suggest Alex Garlands the Beach (I know not everyone liked it) but I found it pacy with a good story and plenty of good quality writing. It has elements of adventure, is easy to read and has depth too. Or for something with humour in it why not something by Douglas Adams or Ben Elton (intelligent but light and funny). maybe Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency?
  12. Oh nightmare! Can't you just stick it at the bottom of mount TBR? If you do take it make sure you take something you want to read as well. I hate to think of someone not enjoying their holiday books!
  13. Does it have to be books published in 2007? Or read in 2007? I've hardly read any contemporary books this year so far.
  14. LOL. I have to admit it did make me laugh when I came across it.
  15. Herbs that is! I didn't know whether this should go in cookery or gardening but as its about indoor windowsill herbs for cooking I thought I'd put it in cookery! Parsley - whenever I've bought parsley, its ok for a few weeks but before long it gets infested with teeny teeny yellow mites that look like a fine dust on the leaves. Anyone know any remedies? Basil - I'm currently growing basil and some of the leaves get black dry patches on, not just at the tips but in the middle. Does anybody know what they are? And are those leaves OK to eat?
  16. Yes. I forgot "Its a wonderful life" with Jimmy Stewart also Fight Club (I should really read the book) Alien (Great suspense - had my stomach in knots)
  17. All the blood transfusion stuff made me quite queasy, I had to skim read those bits as I have a bit of a blood phobia. I am also quite curious as to what "making a toilet" is. Characters keep going off to make their toilets. Toilet is a euphamism for the loo isn't it. This must be using the original meaning which I assume means to freshen up. (Like eau de toilette)
  18. I need more bookmarks. I'm currently using a dog eared old leather one that I've had for YEARS. When I was younger I had a metal one with a butterfly shaped hook that hooked over the spine of the book. I wonder if I still have it somewhere.
  19. Oh that's one of my all time favourites. Absolutely hilarious! I'm also a big hitchcock fan. I love Rear window and psycho. There's another really good Cary grant one where he works in a shoe shop (or is dating someone in a shoe shop) but I don't know the name of it. One of my all time fave films is the Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland. other faves are: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind Memento Being John Malkovich Oh and about a million others but that's all I can think of right now.
  20. I loved The turn of the screw. Very creepy. Owen Wingrave is good too (another short story/novella) They send shivers down my spine though.
  21. Hi nice to meet you
  22. Hi Aimz - yea its great I am here Its weird to read the original having seen so many hammer horrors and TV adaptations etc over the years. Some of the lines seem corny - but only because they have been used so much ever since. "I am here to do your bidding master." Lol. Vampires are one of my scariest things so I hope it wont get too creepy
  23. I've had a P D James on my shelf for some time now. I will read it one day I didn't know she wrote children of men. I missed it at the cinema but would like to watch it.
  24. hehe - I'm loving Dracula (Only 100 pages in though) and I LOVED turn of the screw! My 5: White teeth - Zadie Smith - well written but I could not sympathise with any of the characters. They all seemed quite self absorbed. Gave up half way. Captain Corelli's mandolin - well written but dull, too long-winded and not enough pace for me. Gave up half way. The Mill on the Floss - George Eliot. Did it for A Level. Aaarghh!! The wives of bath - Wendy Holden. The most appalling drivel! The characters were gross caricatures and mostly very annoying. Ugh I hated it - utter nonsense. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley. Found the writing style quite annoying.
