  1. Ratna, I'm with you on this! And>>> Have they already aired the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency movie in Great Britain? If so, I will try to track it down here in the States.
  2. Interesting question... A lot of the authors I read are British... but there are also a few who aren't... including Elizabeth George... who, although from U.S., writes as if she truly came from Great Britain!
  3. I only peek at the end of the book if I am not enjoying the book and am thinking of not finishing it. There are too many books in my book shelf that are good... why waste time on something I'm not enjoying. But, I always have to know the end...
  4. I just ordered the first of the Tales of the City books. I can't wait to get them. Thanks (to all) for the recommendation. I am always on the look-out for a new author!
  5. Judy... You probably think I'm following you from one Alexander McCall Smith thread to the next! Now you have piqued my interest in Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City. (Would the Tale's book character you are referring to happen to be Michael Tolliver?) I'm off to order the first Tales of the City... your taste for Alexander McCall Smith suggests that I might just enjoy Maupin!
  6. Steffie, I remember my first post... I was so nervous... wondered if I would fit in... even used my spell-checker... Welcome to the board... They have made me feel very welcome.
  7. Oblomov, (I finally got back to the forum!) Thanks for the information on where I can find that story... I have added it to my personal TBR list, so that I can one day read it. That really was an ingenious plan!
  8. Ruth, If you like Alexander McCall Smith as much as it sounds.... you are really in for a lot of reading fun... He also has the Professor Doctor Moritz Maria Von Igelfeld trilogy! It's a little different than the others, but very enjoyable. I started reading the Ladies' Detective Agency series before trying his Philosophy Club series. I prefer the Ladies' series over the Philosophy Club, but I wonder if that is because I started with that one. My husband started by reading the Ladies' Philosophy, and he prefers that one. My daughter is now reading the Philosophy Club books...
  9. Janet, If you get a chance to rent the Mapp and Lucia DVDs... I really recommend the first series (over the second)... But, caution: The Lucia world is so much fun that you might find that you will absolutely have to read the books!
  10. Judy, I had never heard about The Tales of the City (not to be confused with the Two Cities!) until you posted the above letter. I just looked at Amazon, and see that it actually is a series of books. (I should have known that as "library lady," you would know!) Since both of us like the 44 Scotland Street happenings so much, I am thinking that I would probably like the Tales of the City series, also. Thanks for posting about them...
  11. Janet, The novel "Mapp and Lucia" was made into a television series several years ago... which might be how you heard of it. I was lucky enough to have seen it when it aired on television, and I loved it so much that I then bought the series of books. The television series was made in the UK, and stars Geraldine McEwan, Prunella Scales, and Nigel Hawthorne. It is a wonderfully cast series, and it does justice to the novel. The only bad thing about the television series is that they didn't make all of the novels into shows. I cannot recommend E. F. Benson enough!
  12. My husband and I both read 44 Scotland Street and Espresso Tales at the same time. We live close to the college both of our children were attending, so we tried to get up there every weekend to take them to lunch. We did exactly what you described... We would tell them all of the wonderful Bertie happenings while en route to the restaurants. I was very surprised when my son decided to read both of the books, and my daughter is reading the first one right now. (My son reads only science fiction, so these books were departures for him. And, yes, he enjoyed them. Although there is something to be said about telling prospective readers all of the great moments in a book.)
  13. Judy, Thanks so much for letting us know. I am looking forward to it. I can only imagine how Bertie sees the world! Danna
  14. Has anyone here read E. F. Benson's Lucia novels? They are absolutely delightful... extremely well-written, great characters, great plots (although, to be honest, not much seems to happen while everything is happening... Difficult to explain what I mean by that.... but if you have read these wonderful novels, then you know exactly what I mean...) The Make Way for Lucia series: 1. Queen Lucia 2. Lucia in London 3. Miss Mapp 4. Mapp and Lucia 5. The Worshipful Lucia 6. Trouble for Lucia Tom Holt later wrote two more novels that follow the sixth Lucia book by E. F. Benson 1. Lucia in Wartime 2. Lucia Triumphant
  15. Judy, Isn't Bertie the cutest little thing? I won't pull a spoiler here... but, if anyone hasn't read the 44 Scotland Street/Espresso Tales books... wait until you meet Bertie... I still smile when I think of his Italian description of his teacher....
