  1. Saw this lovely quote, and knew y'all'd love it too. "Shelved rows of books warm and brighten the starkest room, and scattered single volumes reveal mental processes in progress -- books in the act of consumption, abandoned but readily resumable, tomorrow or next year". -John Updike, writer (18 Mar 1932-2009)

Definitely! I was looking through a home magazine looking for inspiration and came across wallpaper decorated with books, why not just have the books? It looked awful!

I know! Almost as awful as people buying books by the foot...for decorating purposes only. Oy.

  5. Um, this is really a question for all of us...what has happened to Julie? I couldn't find the place to private message her, and her avatar is gone, plus no answer on The Yak Shack. Hasn't been online in I think about a month or so. Anyone know anything?

  7. Thanks a lot y'all! :D I twisted my foot just after getting out of the hotel shuttle back at home, the graduated curb wasn't marked and I didn't notice the unevenness...stepped halfway off,and my foot twisted and I went down, like a sack of potatoes. Next day, Sunday, I went to Urgent Care, they x-rayed it...gave me a boot to wear for 6-8 weeks. I wore it 6...oy, miserable, but I was really lucky. It seems to have healed without any problem and NO specialists.

  8. I'm back again, can't get rid of a bad penny, doncha know? :) A bit of travelling, a broken foot, more travelling, road trips, day trips, but will stay put for the moment. So, Hey there y'all!

  9. I'm posting here because I seem to be unable to click on any heading on the front page. If I click on "book blogs" for example I only get the heading for BCF, but no titles. Weirdness. Is it a glitch?

There doesn't appear to be a problem our end. Have you tried a different browser?

I have IE on my machine, as I have always. I have not changed anything. Plus all other forum work as usual. It's only this fourm I have trouble with, and only since yesterday. Nothing else is giving any problems.

  10. You are sweet Chrissy. <<>> July, a summer baby. :)

  11. I suppose we are lucky here, in the Deep South [of U.S.], we've had a few nights here and there of freezing weather. The last two nights were down in the 20'sF. But today it is bright sunshine, and temps almost up to 60F. I'll take it! And be grateful. :)

The weather here has been in the 70's too. We are very lucky to have such weather this time of year.

Julie, don't even mention the word bikini! /sigh/ ;)

karen, so it's unusual for you to have warmish weather this time of year?

Here, it's basically in the wind as to what the weather is. Most of the real Artic cold fronts don't make it down here. When they do, it's a Big Deal.

    4. karen.d

      karen.d

Yes it is a little unusual. Yesterday was the warmest day since the 1940's (was about 24 at about 4-5pm)

  13. We drove down to the Gulf Coast today, just browsing about enjoying the resurgance of the area since Hurricane Katrina. It's wonderful to see the progress in the last few years. Mucked about in an indie book store, and had lunch and found some great shps. Happy day.

So far so good, it navigates pretty easily, and is the wifi version and that works too. I haven't downloaded anything yet, but am looking to soon.

  18. /grinning/ Thanks. Actually we got a lot of "stuff" thrown out, and clearing of junque done, so I feel pretty good about it. :)

  19. Hey Janet, thanks for the b-day wish, but it wasn't my birthday. At first I didn't understand how that date had come about, but last night saw in my profile thingy that I'd put it. As I remember the program wouldn't allow me to skip as I wished. Weirdness. :) Anyhow, sorry for the mix up, and thanks again. :D

  20. Thanks, but it isn't my birthday, dunno what happened...? :) It was a lovely day though, clear, cool, and we got a lot of stuff done!

  21. Now I am really becoming re-interested in the whole thing, must investigate further Vlad books. Take care.

  22. Thanks for the link and recommendation for "Elsie and Mairi Go to War: Two Extraordinary Women on the Western Front". I've ordered it from Amazon after reading the synopsis. They sound like a fascinating pair.

  23. Going mad and tearing paper today...movers coming today to move some verra heavy armoires from one room to the other for us. /groan/ Cats all sequestered and not happy campers. /groan/

Big stuff moved, now the endless detritus of corners and drawers being emptied is left. That of course includes the leftovers of the last 50 years or so.

  24. Hi, that was actually my first Irving, I have a few more on the shelf to read though. I do have to say that he is now one of my favorite authors.

  25. Hey Abc! Happy to see you here. :!!:
