  1. I guess this bit of news caused a stir all over England. Where and how King Richard's remains should be reburied will be a very difficult decision. I can see why some people want the body to be buried nearby - where he has lain all of these years, but at the same time I can also understand why other people think he should be buried with other Kings and Queens of England.
  2. Wordsgood - All I can say is wow! Had me chuckling into my coffee this morning. Have you ever tried your hand at writing? Nick - My son loves snakes. I can admire how beautiful some of them are - but cannot really feel I want to cuddle them They are really beautiful though.
  3. Oh that's a pity! Perhaps you are not in the right frame of mind.
  4. Everyone can join the Reading Circle - it's great fun to discuss a book we read together. It is also fine to comment on any of the past circles we have done - threads remain open, and everyone can post their thoughts any time
  5. wordsgood - I have still not figured out how many pets you have!
  6. That seems like an interesting read. I've never heard of the author, but there must be a reason for him being compared to Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy, I would think.
  7. Hi Mrs Bookworm and welcome to our forum. Please have a look at the rules guidelines and faqs here - they are a good introduction. You can post as many reviews as you like about books you have read. The library is divided into different genres, to make it easier to find discussions about a particular book. We also have a general thread, for general discussions, and as apart from books, this forum has also developed into a little communicty, in the lounge we have other threads which do not particulary have a lot to do with books, but are for general day to day chit chat. Hope this helps - but anyway, I'm sure you'll find your way around in no time at all.
  8. ....Sorry, just saw this! Thanks Muggles What would I say in just a sentence - Perhaps 'Her new masterpiece, featuring mudbloods', or 'No wizards involved - except for the author', or else. 'Moving house? Try Pagford, a nice place to live, except for the neighbours', ''No wands or spells, just boring old sex, drugs, and some neighbours from hell'
  9. Old fashioned chicken soup, or Tom Yum soup are the best remedies in our house!
  10. Yep, I'll have to check that one out as well. Thanks
  11. It's so difficult to get them looking at the camera at the same time. I'll keep trying though
  12. Have to look for Mr Rosenblum's List. Sounds interesting....
  13. Whiskey is a persian as well but he is not flat faced like Storm. He's 8 now [/img]
  14. Chrissy, will give him a hug for you Kylie, it is a great pic isn't it? I look at him and smile. He is a persian, he is now eight weeks old, and we got him Friday. Whiskey was not too happy initially, but he seems to be grudgingly accepting him now
  15. This is our new baby, Storm, aka Stormy, Stormy Skies, Stormy Blue Skies
  16. Although everyone in the whole world knows of Rowling, the same number of people must have anticipated her debut in adult fiction as they would a holiday in another continent, with trepidation, curiosity, fear (that they might have wasted their money), and excitement. Before I read the book, I was wondering whether I was going to regret it, reading a book by someone who was to me, up to that moment, a fantastic author, for fear of shattering my admiration and replacing it with regret. I need not have worried. Although this novel is as different as it could be to Rowling’s earlier masterpieces, it is also a very enjoyable story, with Rowling’s trademark well-formed characters. The story is set in rural England, in modern times. One of the council members, (who incidentally is one of few of this book’s likeable characters) drops dead on his way to his anniversary dinner, thus creating a vacancy on the board. The council had been split into two camps about a matter which was coming up for a vote, and this death was a great blow to the ‘for’ camp. The vacancy caused by his death, known as a casual vacancy, needed to be filled sooner rather than later. But the councillor’s death created more than a casual vacancy, it also opened a can of worms, and revealed a multitude of feelings which had been hitherto well hidden. The plot runs very smoothly, and the story is such a simple one, yet a very true portrait of everyday life. Most of the characters are really unlikeable, and a few of them downright horrible but very real - they could be anyone's own neighbours in any village around the world. The ending made me think that this is one of a series of novels about the village of Pagford and its inhabitants, and if that is the case, I will be looking forward to reading the next in the series.
  17. Have started it, and will probably finish it this week end. I have certainly enjoyed what I've read so far.
  18. Wow 5 pages of comments, and no one seems to have read it yet! We will need to split this thread in parts when they do.
  19. Yep, certainly is. I would also recommend Jo Nesbo. Enjoy.
  20. Hey there guys, how are you all? We had a really big storm this morning - heavy rain and flooding. Temperature is cooler too - although still hot. Wishing everyone a great start to the week.
  21. Yes, I can understand what you mean - it's like being fasinated but repelled at the same time. I find it difficult to accept the theory of a throwback too - some people which society labels as different are obviously handicapped by behavioural problems, but that does not make them throwbacks. I do not really agree that the assistance ceased when Ben was born. The grandmother gave up her personal life to help her daughter and son-in-law with their other children. She was the first to advice that they are being too hasty in bringing more and more kids into the world, but she still stood by them and helped as best as she could. I have Ben in the World to read still - I am waiting for the weather to cool down a bit, so I can concentrate properly and give this book my full attention.
  22. Hi Neverendings. As Chesilbeach has explained, these threads can be used any time.
  23. Yes she did...and she was the one to urge Renee to have dinner with M Uzo...and to do her hair I'm glad I read it though...it's a different style of book.
