  1. Yours Truly, Angry Mob - Kaiser Chiefs
  2. Hiya - don't worry, I wasn't a particularly varied reader before this place came along and changed all that. Most people here are really nice, the only person who bites is Wraith
  3. As I think I may have mentioned before (but not recently), I don't think King's a horror writer at all, and it annoys me that he's always classified as such. Yes, he's written some horror books (vampires and ghosties, etc), but many of them seem more fantasy or thrillers to me. The book with Children of the Corn in was 'Nightshift' - some good shorts in there. If you like his shorts, you should also try: Skeleton Crew Everything's Eventual Four Past Midnight They should give you a good idea of the spetrum of Kings work (although many of his shorts are typical horror).
  4. Wraith's left another book behind for me to read: The Gun Seller - Hugh Laurie Like the look of this one - I've had good experiences with comedians' novels in the past (David Baddiel, Robert Llewelyn, Ben Elton, et al)
  5. Updated list: Dead Souls - Michael Laimo Small Island - Andrea Levy The Mathmatics of Love - Emma Darwin Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell Miracle In The Andes - Nando Parrado The Stars Tennis Balls - Stephen Fry It's Different For Girls - Jo Brand A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby Sick Puppy & Skin Tight - Carl Hiaasen omnibus Native Tongue & Striptease - Carl Hiaasen omnibus Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? - Phillip K Dick The Abortionist's Daughter - Elizabeth Hyde The Throat - Peter Straub Lisey's Story - Stephen King Divorcing Jack - Colin Bateman Gasping - Ben Elton The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne Tengu - Graham Masterson The Devils of D-Day - Graham Masterson Mirror - Graham Masterson Charnel House - Graham Masterson and these random books Wraith left here and thinks I should read: The Reunion - Sue Walker For a Few Demons More - Kim Harrison Countdown - Ruth Wind Should keep me quite for a while, especially since my reading rate is almost non-existent at the moment.
  6. Just silly little things really, difficult to explain. It felt to me like the expressions used by the characters were almost clichéd, that they were speaking in the way a 20th century person would have expected them to speak, rather than how they would actually speak. I guess I thought that the language seemed a little forced and didn't flow very well, although that's probably just because I don't normallly read historical quasi-fiction - I'm used to reading modern fiction or genuinely old fiction. Does that make sense? It was just things like: and: It's just overly sincere, and in the mind of such a sarcastic person, that's just asking for ridicule
  7. The Stand is an awesome book - not my favourite King, but right near the top. Tried to get Dr Wraith to read it - he took one look at the publication date and said "I don't read anything publisher before 1998". Weirdo (he will read it though )
  8. I've given up - the language had me in hysterics and I just couldn't take it seriously. I'm very immature . I've put it to one side and will doubtlessly come back to it when I'm not in such a sarky mood
  9. The control freak in me is going mental! I received 3 new books yesterday through the post and I'm expecting another to arrive soon, they all need to be bumped to the top of my TBR pile and I'm freaking out about it! It's really weird, because I offered to read the books (they're for future projects for the forum), and I'm pleased and excited to be helping out, there's just this part of me that's thinking "you should be reading Cloud Atlas"! The 3 that arrived yesterday are: The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox - Maggie O'Farrell Small Island - Andrea Levy The Mathmatics of Love - Emma Darwin They're all very far removed from my normal reading choices (although I'm not so sure what they are at the moment - I'm just reading everything!), but I'm really looking forward to them. I've already started 'Esme Lennox' and, although I'm only 30 pages in, I'm already hooked and think I'm really going to enjoy it.
  10. Hiya and welcome. Normally I'd say Hi Wrath, but we have a Wraith and it would get too confusing Why don't you pop across to thge introduction thread and telkl us a bit about you? I promise we don't bite
  11. Facinating - such imagery and amazingly well developed charaters. I must read it
  12. Welcome to the forum, Book Garden!
  13. "Now, just a minute -" John began. "Just a minute yourself, Mr Woods," Chief Molyneux interrupted. "Your son has been present at the commission of four homicides; and whether he committed them himself or whether some wacky ghost came popping out of him and committed them for him, he's still a danger to the community at large, and he's probably a danger to himself, too." Death Dream - Graham Masterson
  14. Poor Michelle, you don't even get time to sit
  15. The Surgeon? It was ok, very difficult for me to read though . . .
  16. I loved Asterix! I used to have an Asterix omnibus (it's currently in a big pile of books at my parent's house ready to go to the charity shop), I also loved Tintin
  17. I could sell you a handmade Wraith bookmark, although I really need to get on and finish the ones from the competition (makes mental note to stop spending so much b**dy time online!)
  18. Eddie and Susanna from The Dark Tower series (I though he was 'cute' while she was so feisty and strong in overcoming her disability) and Prot from the K-PAX trillogy (gotta love an 'alien').
  19. No, I haven't - I'm just working my way through my TBR pile. I might try another one as I liked the idea of "Johnny and the Bomb", it just felt a little disjointed. My Dad has offered to loan me a couple of Pratchett's books, but it's all a little daunting - my Dad owns every (adult) book Pratchett's ever written and the pile's almost as tall as I am!
  20. I prefer paperback because I do most of my reading while travelling and they're much more portable, plus they take up less room on my bookshelves!
  21. I hadn't read any until I was sent one for the book discussions.
  22. Last CD I bought was Jamiroquai High Times - Singles 1992 - 2006. I'd been waiting ages for them to release a greatest hits album - I like a lot of their singles but haven't liked much I've heard off their albums. Have to say I've hardly listened to it because I got 12 Stops and Home by The Feeling for Christmas, which I love and just seem to want to listen to all the time!
