  1. Ooh, ooh... I read that too! In fact, I wrote an essay comparing 1984 and Brave New World with Z for Zaccariah and another one.. can't remember the name. (I've just bought Brave New World after starting this thread.. I may have to go look for Z for Zaccariah!)
  2. So many books.. such little time! huh?!
  3. Well I thought the cockerel was funny, but my favourite so far was the vermine.. instead of jumping off the cliffs, they abseil down, and row across the water!
  4. Do you have any memories of books you read at school.. the ones you loved, or hated? I have a memory from my first year at secondary school.. we had an English teacher who was really scarey (she was deputy head too), but really good. We read The Hobbit, and she would often read it out to us. She used different voices and such, but not in a silly way.. iykwim. I've always loved that book because of it. I also have memories of reading Brave New World and 1984. Plus, I can remember looking at Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth), and thinking "huh?".. but then as we studied it, it all made sense. 8) The book we all hated, and persuaded our teacher to drop was 'An Inspector Calls'.
  5. I think I'm enjoying Reaper Man even more... I'm not sure if there's more humour, or just more of my humour.. iykwim?
  6. A review I read said you don't miss out by not reading Darwin's Radio (I think that's the title), but I'm not sure - it probably gives a better understanding of SHEVA. The science bit went over my head a little (I think Lou would enjoy this one), but I enjoyed it most looking how people reacted to something that was 'different'. Given their own 'community' the children (teenagers) were able to develop their own lives (such as the houses being completely different), but they weren't allowed to do that within the 'normal' community, because people were scred of them.
  7. Excellent book.. I enjoyed that! Now on to the next 2 in the trilogy!
  8. (Making things easier for anyone searching.. ) Following on from this post, I decided to go for Mort.. well, in fact, I went for the Death Trilogy. I've started the first few pages, and I think I'm going to enjoy it. It seems to have my sort of humour.
  9. I must have read every Famous Five, Secret Seven, St Claires etc etc when I was a little 'un.
  10. I agree with you.. and I've read reviews saying the same thing. I wasn't sure if it was just me though.. I read the rest almost one after the other, then I had a gap before Survivor, so I wasn't sure if that was to blame. The good news is that I saw some reviews on Amazon that say that Origin is back to her usual standard!
  11. Well I've just finished it (library book.. needed to go back), and I thought it was pretty good. I'll come along and make some comments once everyone has started on it. (Lou, try to get hold of it.. I would imagine you'd like it.)
  12. Yep, as I've said elsewhere.. I now have 'lost boy, lost girl' to read, then I'll probably read this one again.
  13. It's only nominated.. voting hasn't finished yet. Mind you, I've just bought it.. and am looking forward to reading it now!
  14. Now or when you were younger.. are there any books that have really scared you.. to the extent of not wanting to switch the light off, or lying there thinking about it? For me, the only 2 were The Amityville Horror and The Shining.

    Louise

JD Robb.. I guess it's best to start with Glory In Death, which is the first one. I, however, started with book 2 (I keep doing that! lol) Rapture in Death, and decided I wanted to go back to the beginning. I was then totally hooked!
  16. I found it hard to score, actually. I had trouble really feeling for the characters, but then that happens in quite a few books. However, overall, it was a fairly enjoyable book.
  17. So.. I read this on holiday, which I didn't think I'd be able to do. I read a bit each night, then some in the launderette. Random thoughts..... I certainly felt as if I should have read 'lost boy lost girl' first, and in fact I shall probably do so, then go back and read this again. Having emails crop up near the beginning made me smile, but I ended up getting so annoyed with the IRC-type text.. Cyrax was explaining what was going on, but it was hard to follow. A fictional character crossing over into the 'real world' was interesting.. how would you feel if you discovered your whole life was nothing but a story, and the author's memories? I too had problems really attaching to the characters though, and I didn't feel much loss when Willy disappeared. I can't say Straub has become one of my favourite authors.. I gave up on Mr X, and although this was enjoyable enough, it wasn't great. Btw, if anyone would like to borrow it, let me know.
  18. I've read it on holiday, and will be back later with some comments. Jo, would it have made more sense to read 'lost boy, lost girl' first?
  19. Chosen Book: In the Night Room - Peter Straub As a suggestion, please put at the top of your post which chapter you're up to. Then if some one hasn't reached that far, they know not to read that post. I just feel that if we wait until we've finished to post, because we're all worried about spoilers, many of the smaller discussions will get missed.. we'll end up discussing the book as a whole, instead of particular bits of it that grab our attention. Does that make sense?
  20. Are you looking for suggestions for your own children, or wish to reminisce about your own childhood reading?
  21. I used to listen to my horror stories in bad, on my walkman, when I was having troule sleeping. Bit silly, when you think about it!
  22. Does any one like listening to audio books? I have to admit that I have a tendency to skim over some descriptive bits in some books, whereas with an audio version, you have to listen to it all. Mind you, I did once have a tape of old horror stories, which were really good.
  23. Do you read one book at a time, or do you often have more than that on the go? I always used to do the former, but now often find I start one book, and my attention gets grabbed by another, so I sometimes end up reading two or more at the same time.. often depending on my mood.
  24. Do you have a favourite bookmark, which goes from book to book.. or are you like me, and can never lay your hands on one?! I often grab whichever scrap of paper is closer, or sometimes I try to memorise my page number.. and always forget it!
