  1. Thank you Michelle. I’ve had a quick look at both GoodReads and LibraryThing. Visually, they are very fussy, like a busy cafe - LT less so. No doubt I’ll get lost, but might give LT a go 😅 I love the layout of this forum best of all. It’s very calm.
  2. Ha, I was in the middle of sorting one out. ( will wait now) I recognise yours from Black Books. Great series - very funny.
  3. Thanks. It’ll be goodbye soon...😢
  4. Damn, that’s sad; just as I joined. 😖 I really liked this forum. Facebook is alien to me.
  5. Is Slaughterhouse Five considered a US classic? I read it in my late teens, and at the time thought it was a masterpiece. Trouble is, I can’t remember much about it all, today. Maybe I should re- read.
  6. I know what you mean about Jane Austen and agree with you. At school ( all girls) we had both Jane Eyre and Pride and Predjudice as set books. Practically everyone finished reading Jane Eyre within a week, and by the end of the book had fallen madly in love with Mr Rochester. (including me!) Pride and Predjudice on the other hand was a chore to read. We slogged it out for a whole year. At the time, I remember it being all about manners a snobbism. Maybe we were too young at 12yrs? Although I didn’t enjoy reading Pride and Prejudice, I always enjoy watching the film and tv versions of the book. Oh, I meant to add... I know a man who enjoyed reading Jane Eyre. He liked her strong character.
  7. Grilled fresh sardines! I’ve got a craving for salty foods in this weather. Strange, because normally I’m a carnivore and not particularly fond of fish. I’ve also been snacking on crisps and salted nuts. As for dessert, I’m eating more fresh fruit than usual, blueberries ( with plain yogurt) strawberries and especially cherries. I love cherries!
  8. I’m watching The Naked Kiss. A film noir recorded earlier from The Talking Pictures channel. It’s a bit bizarre but looks promising.
  9. That’s a great list. The only one I didn’t like was The Great Gatsby. I found it a bit boring. I agree with others - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Last of the Mochicans are worth reading..... also: A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Heminway In Cold Blood - Truman Capote The Call of the Wild - Jack London
  10. So after this one I can? Great 👍 (‘predictive text’ can be a nuisance when you can’t change it)
  11. I am reading The Viper of Milan by Marjorie Bowen. It’s an old battered hardback copy which I found in the library. The title appealed to me, and after reading and liking the first couple of pages, I took it home.
  12. The first that came to mind are: Charlotte Bronté Emily Bronté Charles Dickens R.L.Stevenson Graham Greene Michael Bulgakov Alexander Dumas Daphne du Maurier John Steinbeck Oscar Wilde
  13. Just to add ( I’m not sure how to edit here) a out of people seem to have good things to say about Dostoevsky’s The Brother’s Karamazov. I’ll try that one too.
