  1. Much cooler this weekend, windy and rainy yesterday, calmer today but still chilly and showers off and on. Went to the famous gardens at Wisley yesterday and managed to avoid most of the showers, had a nice time there. Got some plant ideas but didn't buy anything, still too chilly to put out anything new.
  2. Hi, welcome to the forum. Jane and Tess are two of my favourites too, have fun finding your way round here (there's a section on the classics).
  3. Enjoy your cake! yes after a slow start this year does seem to speeding past! Scary.
  4. Glad you enjoyed it, the TV series is good, especially the Young Montalbano who is rather swoonsome!
  5. That's good, they do tend to come back though don't they
  6. A Nest of Vipers by Andrea Camilleri - another case for the Sicilian inspector and his team when a local businessman is found murdered in his home, it turns out he was ruthless towards his competitors, and a total womaniser, therefore the list of suspects is endless, even his own son isn't too bothered by his father's violent demise. Then it turns out he was killed twice -first poisoned, then shot.... Montalbano has to sort out the mystery, as well as dealing with his own rather turbulent private life, with his whiny girlfriend Livia dropping in and out, only to argue and flounce off, and there's lots of lovely food as well! These stories aren't to be taken seriously, there are so many plot holes and breaches of police etiquette that Montalbano should have been fired years ago, but they're enjoyable light reads, with the feeling that good, in some form, will prevail in the end. 7/10
  7. They've changed it so much it probably doesn't matter if you've read the books! Although I think some of the later books would make good standalone stories for TV.
  8. I think White Nights is my favourite of the Shetland books. Yes Douglas Henshall is very good in the role but nothing like her description of Perez! And for some reason they never adapted White Nights for TV, although they've done most of the earlier books (in the wrong order too and for some reason they also made Cassie much older than she is in the books).
  9. Must have rained over night, and raining now.
  10. Thanks better for now. Hope yours has gone too!
  11. Glad you had a lovely break, the weather couldn't have been better could it!
  12. I've got the Infirmary to read, I'm up to book 6 in the Ryan series so I suppose it doesn't really matter when I read The Infirmary! I love Ann Cleeves's Shetland books, very atmospheric, a good series to get into. The TV series has made quite a lot of changes from the books though.
  13. Drilling is a nightmare, hopefully it won't last too long - they're refurbishing the building opposite us (our old office building) and sometimes they're drilling nearly all day, it's been driving us crazy. Everywhere seems so much noisier now I had a migraine over the weekend too which didn't really go until Sunday evening. At least it's a short working week!
  14. I think this one and Sense and Sensibility are her best books, have a go at Sense, I think you'll like that one too. I don't much like her other books and am not a big Austen fan generally - A Level English probably put paid to that ! I do intend to re-read Persuasion at some point though.
  15. Is anyone watching Line of Duty? Last week's episode - OMG
  16. Had a flat tyre on Thursday night which meant I only had the spare tyre on the car for Friday and couldn't travel very far, finally managed to get a new tyre on Saturday, went to a friend's for dinner on Saturday night which was nice despite the lights fusing just as she served the first course! Yesterday went to a country fair and saw some gorgeous baby goats, turned down the offer to bottle feed them, wish I had done it now but it was fun watching everyone else do it, it was a free for all! Not sure about today, looking like it might rain. Hope everyone's enjoying the long weekend.
  17. Similar forecast here, although the rain clouds are already building.
  18. I worked in Sainsbury's as a teenager and when we unloaded stock we always used to put the larger cardboard boxes near the checkouts for customers to use, in fact quite often I'd be unpacking and someone would come and wait for me to empty the box so they could use it for their shopping. We also had paper carrier bags for customers to buy if they wanted them. This was in the early 1980s.
