  1. Though one of my favorite authors is Jean Plaidy the one book of hers I didn't care for was The Lady in the Tower about Anne Boleyn. All of her other books are pretty historically accurate but this one was not. Several sentences and dialogue in the book were repeated many times throughout. And Anne Boleyn's character was potrayed as very boring (that's a first!).

  2. I think a lot of people also confuse him with Oliver Cromwell [ different century.

He's also distantly related to Thomas Cromwell.

]I see that you are from USA, are a lot of people interested in English history there?I live in England, so naturally am, but actually find American history fascinating too.

Not really. A lot of emphasis gets placed on American history here which is nice because I like American history as well; particularly about the Native Americans. Speaking of which, do you gardengirl or Vimes know of any definitive biographies about Pocahontas?

  3. So Dance with Dragons is a bit boring too? That`s a pity!

Muggle I don`t know these authors, look for information about them.

Cuppy my favourite Agatha Christy book is Murder on the Orient Express. I haven`t read all her books yet but I want to. What`s your favourite?

    Bobbly thanks!

Probably, Thirteen at Dinner by Christie.

  4. Hi Vimes and Cuppycakes,

yes, I love historical stuff, as long as it's well written [although you can apply that to any genre I guess.]When I was a teenager [oh so long ago!] I read nothing else BUT Jean Plaidy, is she still in print?Wonderful stuff, light-ish but all the history is there and well told.I also used to read Norah Lofts another good writer from way back, but historical stuff doesn't really date does it [or does it?]Have you read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel?Tremendous!

Haven't read Wolf Hall but have heard a lot about it. Like many history authors Mantel is no different in that she has a particular soft spot for a historical figure, which in this case is Cromwell. I read an interview with her once where she said that she didn't think that Cromwell planned every detail about Anne Boleyn's trial and that he more or less just carried on the case against her based on what others had to say about her. I have to disagree with that because Cromwell was no saint, he was crafty and I think he did have a lot more to do with the charges against Anne's.

  5. Jean Plaidy writes Historical fiction. Her real name is Eleanor Hibbert. She also wrote with other names like Victoria Holt. She is fantastic! She is a renown historical fiction author known for her historical accuracy. I love her Tudor saga. Are you a Tudor fan?

  6. What are your thoughts on J.K. Rowling, Raven?

I'm actually interested to see how this goes, especially being set somewhere so different from the others. Personally I love the HP universe (although more so in the books than the films), and really hope they're doing this properly rather than just to milk the cash cow.

On a side note . . . I wonder how many characters Warwick Davies will play in this one? :giggle2:

 On another side note I like Warwick Davies. He had a show called "Life's too Short" that I loved. Have you ever seen that show Signor?

  7. I want to read Emily Bronte and Charlotte Bronte.

I read "Twenties Girl" by Sophie Kinsella and it was great.

I like that book as well.

What's your favorite Agatha Christie book?

  8. Agatha Christie's one of my favorites as well!

I also like Wilkie Collins, Rhys Bowen, Madeleine Wickham/Sophie Kinsella, P.G. Wodehouse, Allison Weir, Jean Plaidy, Frances Hodgson Burnett and Emily Bronte and Charlotte Bronte.

  9. @cuppycakes: (Love the name by the way.) The first books that got me hooked on fantasy were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. After this it was the Empire trilogy (beginning with Daughter of the Empire) by Raymond E Feist, as well as the original Magician trilogy by the same author. Also, maybe try Hogfather, Going Postal, Night Watch or The Truth - these were the books that got me hooked on Terry Pratchett, even though they're not in anything even remotely resembling reading order. :D

    Thank you!

  10. Hello everyone

I was looking forward to reading an E.M. Forster book because I loved the adaption of A Room With A View starring Helena Bonham Carter.

I decided to read A Passage to India but I was dissappointed because even though the plot and characters were okay the book itself I found a bit boring. I didn't finish reading it. Does anyone else like or dislike this book? If so why?

  11. I'm not an avid fantasy book reader, however I once co-wrote a short story/fan-fiction based on fantasy and it was great fun! I would love to read some Fantasy books any recommendations?

  12. I thought it would be nice to revive this topic. I love Documentaries based on History particularly about Art and the British monarchy. Two of some of my favorite Histrorians are Lucy Worsley and Alastair Sooke.

  13. Thank you poppyshakes! :D

Hello Athena  Which Agatha Christie book do you have?

Hello Signor Finzione  ! My favorite Shakespeare is As You Like It.  It was also the first work I read of his.

I haven't read anything by Phillipa Gregory but I have seen The Other Bolyen Girl. From what I have read about her, it seems that she is a very good storyteller so her books must be a great read! But she gets a lot criticism in the History scholar world. But I do enjoy reading about the Medieval/Renaissance era both fiction and non fiction.
