  1. I'm currently immersed in a biography: Peter the Great by Robert K. Massie. The writing is wonderful, and the history is fascinating.
  2. I haven't read anything by Nicholas Sparks yet, but I have a copy of The Notebook that I purchased from a thrift shop several weeks ago. It has been sitting on my shelf for all that time, neglected and unread. Since reading all of your enthusiastic comments, though, it's going to the top of my TBR list. Thanks.
  3. CONGRATULATIONS CHESILBEACH! I got 4 1/2. Aw, let's make it 5/10.
  4. I've read some of Shakespeare's poetry, but sometimes the language defeats me. One of my goals is to be able to understand and enjoy his plays and sonnets more. I've recently found a wonderful website that is very helpful. http://www.shakespeares-sonnets.com from Sonnet XXXIII Full many a glorious morning have I seen Flatter the mountain tops with sovereign eye, Kissing with golden face the meadows green, Gilding pale streams with heavenly alchemy;
  5. I like Hardy's poem, The Darkling Thrush. One of my favourite poets is Emily Dickinson. I especially like her nature poems. Other favourites: D. H. Lawrence (Snake), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Hiawatha), E. Pauline Johnson (Thistle-down), Percy Bysshe Shelley (Love's Philosophy), Christina Georgina Rossetti (What is Pink?) - to name just a few.
  6. I've read several of these stories. One of my favourite stories by Katherine Mansfield is The Tiredness of Rosabel. I also like O. Henry with his surprise endings. The Rocking Horse by D. H. Lawrence is amazing. I haven't read American Horse by Louise Erdrich, but I like her writing and would like to read more of her work, including her short stories. Currently, I'm reading a collection of stories by Yiyun Li (A Thousand Years of Good Prayers).
  7. Hi Julie, I found it at one of the libraries I visit on their "travelling books" shelf. It's not the most exotic place to find a bookcrossing book, but at least it's out of the weather. I'd like to find one in a tree one day as I've heard of a few people releasing books that way by sealing them in ziploc bags and hanging them from branches. I haven't read The Poisonwood Bible yet (shame on me), so I'm hoping I'll like The Lacuna, seeing as how I'll have nothing to compare it with. Les Mis is trying my patience, too. A Les Mis Support Group is a great idea! I wonder how we go about doing this. Verna
  8. It's 10:00 a.m. here in Canada (PT), and I'm ready to begin reading after taking care of a few chores. My goals: finish The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry this morning (120 pages to go) Then I had in mind to read two or three shorter novels - Parnassus on Wheels, Freya of the Seven Isles, The Overcoat. Good Luck to everyone and Happy Reading!
