  1. I haven't read it, but the titles seem interesting enough to make me look for it the next time I go to the library...
  2. God! I so hate the term "hot". What ever happened to "handsome", "beautiful" or a"attractive"?
  3. Have you guys ever read any books by a Romanian writer? Have you come across any good translations into English of works from Romanian literature? If yes, what did you think about them? If not, I could make you some recommendations, if you want...
  4. Who is your favorite playwright in the history of literature? If it is too difficult to nominate just one, tell us your top 5 playwrights whose works you have found to be completely fascinating... What do you like in particular about his/her works ?
  5. Books turned into movies sometimes fail to meet our expectations. Do you usually watch movies just because you've read the book and want to compare them? What is the worst movie adaptation of a book that you have read?
  6. Give a caption to the above member's avatar. The caption can be funny, interesting, original or alluding to anything you want... The guy or gal after me starts.
  7. Do you know of any detective fiction (be it novels or short stories) without the plot involving a murder? I guess there must be some novels where the detective solves cases about thieves, not murderers, but I'm not familiar with detective and mystery literature. However, I wish to enlarge my "to read" list in this area, so could you suggest me some of the ones that you know? Please don't recommend me any children's books with Scooby Doo or anything like that...
  8. A lot of people usually memorize a few famous lyrics, even if just involuntarily. Some verses or lyrics are some beautifully-crafted that get stuck in your mind from the first time you hear or read them. But not as many people have the habit of memorizing full poems. I, personally, try to learn many poems, just for sheer passion. I graduated from the Literature section of a Romanian University, and some of my professors have fascinated me with their skills of poetry recitation. It is also an incredible exercise that keeps the mind active... Scientists say that, in the long run, constantly memorizing things helps one live longer and prevents Alzheimer's. What is you opinion on memorizing poems? Do you do it? Why or why not?
  9. So, do you have any authors that you have a crush on because of their looks? Tell us a little bit about the authors that you find attractive, and what you like about them... You can even post some pictures of them for exemplification. My crushes often change, so I'm just going to tell you the one that comes to my mind at the moment... Suheir Hammad... There's just something that fascinates me about her oriental looks... Too bad she hasn't been translated into my language. I read her books in English, but I wish more people would discover her talent...
  10. Alright, so I need you to recommend me novels or short stories about little people (dwarfs, cause midgets is not politically correct). Not dwarves from the fantasy genre and children's story, but actual people suffering from illnesses that has stunt their growth... The ones that come to mind at the moment are: "The Dwarf" by Pär Lagerkvist "Mendel's Dwarf" by Simon Mawer "The Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass Tell me more, if you know, please...
  11. Thanks, guys & gals! Any other recommendations are still welcomed...
  12. Sorry, I can't help you with the title, but I was just wondering how the Sun could be in the center of a planet. It would have to be either a very small sun or a gigantic planet, in order offer the proper climatic conditions for the existence of life. Could such a planet exist within the universe?
  13. Didn't Robin Hood and his merry men have long hair? Also, Tarzan and John Connor from Jasoom? Or was that just in the movie adaptations?
  14. Hmm... It sounds intriguing... I have never purchased from Amazon, though... What is the book about?
  15. I have a Kobo Touch reader, and I like it a lot. I like how they give you those virtual rewards for reading a lot or for searching a lot of words in the dictionary... Their online store, though not as big as Amazon and Barnes&Noble, has an impressive selection of books.
  16. I know that he didn't technically wrote detective novels, but rather short stories, but still... do you think that he can be considered the father of detective literature? Could his "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" be the sources that inspired so many authors of detective fiction afterwards?
  17. Can you, please, recommend me the best novels about unrequited love that you have read? It doesn't matter the author, the period or the genre, but it has to be novels (not drama or poetry) and it has to have the motif of unrequited love in the main plot or in one of the subplots... Thank you ...
