  1. Just downloaded this book and I'm 25% through it already. Really enjoying this book and I am finding it very difficult to put down.

I found is difficult to put down too! :)

What a terrific review :) I have had this book on my to-be-read shelf for years, and am now thinking that I should read it soon.

    You definitely should :)

  2. I just bought 4 new books, as they were 2 for £3 in The Works. I got:

    • The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert
    • Beauty by Robin McKinley
    • Insatiable by Meg Cabot
    • The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa.

I decided to get The Secret of Crickley Hall as I enjoyed the TV series, and have read a couple of James Herbert books before. I saw it in Waterstones just before I went in The Works. It was £8.00 in there, but £1.99 in The Works!

Insatiable and The Immortal Rules I bought because of the authors.

I have no idea what to expect from Beauty though. I guess I bought it because it was cheap and I liked the cover.

  4. I use a kindle keyboard. I bought it second hand on ebay. It was in very good condition, was only £75 and came with a case that costs around £50 new. Needless to say i was very happy.

The first ereader i had was an iriver cover story. It cost more than double the amount of the kindle, and was pretty rubbish.

Occasionally i will read on my galaxy tab, but prefer to use the kindle :)

  5. My mum mentioned that to me before it was on, and I remember reading the book - and yet I can't find a record of it anywhere! :o I recall it being quite close to the book, but there was more to the instructions she found. I enjoyed both. :)

I just had a look on goodreads, and the book is actually part of a series of 4 books. I just read the prologue of the book, and I already can't wait to get around to reading it :P

I've had this book on my TBR list for awhile now...I didn't realize there was a movie...I'll have to move the book up my list so I can look for the movie :D

I watched the film first because I though I probably wouldn't be bothered about reading the book. However, the film changed my mind :P

Plus the film was on the sky+ box, and my dad is obsessed with deleting things ;)

  6. I finished reading The Northern Lights (at about 2am this morning) :D

    I gave it 4/5 stars.

Despite reading the book a few years ago, I couldn't really remember what happened, so it still managed to surprise me! :)

The Northern Lights is probably one of the most unique books I've ever read. I love that it is set in a world similar to ours, that manages to be so different at the same time.

To me, there is just the right balance between description and dialogue. I dislike books with tons and tons of dialogue, but on the other hand if their is too much description I tend to get bored and skip parts of it.

Altogether, I'm glad I decided to re-read TNL. It seems to make more sense to me as an adult than it did as a child. I sometimes wonder why it is even classed as children's fiction.

  7. I've been naughty and 'borrowed' some e-books from a colleague at work :giggle: I think my TBR pile is about to grow exponentially!

    I got:

About A Boy - Nick Hornby

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne

    Ghost Story - Peter Straub

    Shadowland - Peter Straub

I Am The Messenger - Markus Zusak

The Illustrated Man - Ray Bradbury

Tuesdays With Morrie - Mitch Albom

The Zombie Survival Guide - Max Brooks

    :giggle:

I've only read About a Boy. I seem to remember preferring the film to the book, though the book is good too :)

I have most of the others, though I haven't even heard of any of them apart from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

  8. Oh, I hate when that happens! My local courier isn't very reliable, and sometimes the links showing when delivery is due show my books as being on their van for over a week:( Other times, they deliver them to my work instead of my house, because my house is slightly more inconvenient to get to - which would be fine, but I only do 2 days a week in that workplace, so if I just miss them or am off sick or on hol it can be ages before I actually get them! Hope yours come soon and you really enjoy them when you receive them :)

That sounds like a terrible service! Do you mean that they deliver to the work place even after instruction to deliver to your home? :o

  9. At the moment I'm about 30% through reading The Northern Lights AKA The Golden Compass. I read it a few years ago, but I think I was too young as it seems much better this time around. (And I liked it the first time).

I can't really understand why the series is classed as 'children's fiction' :S

  10.

I still haven't read Marley & Me, I think the trailers for the film put me off, but as frankie has recommended it I have now added it to my wish list.. I have A Street Cat Named Bob on my shelf and I think I will be getting around to it soon. I have read quite a few doggy books and from last years reading I can highly recommend A Dog's Purpose: A Novel for Humans by W. Bruce Cameron, I found the first chapter or two a little odd but loved it once I got the gist of it.. here's a link.. :)

*Sees kindle edition but forces self to resist urge to buy*

  11. OK - Thread Open :)

So I've started the year with three books on the go:

A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle - I'm really enjoying this one so far, though I must say it's a little strange. I'm looking forward to finding out what's really going on as I'm really not sure yet. (I hope things do come clear)

The Making of Modern Britain - Andrew Marr - This is really good so far. I'm not too far in but it's written in a very readable and lively style that makes it very engaging.

Is It Just Me? - Miranda Hart (audio) - This is ok so far. To be honest I was a little disappointed at first because I thought I'd love it, and actually began to worry I'd find it annoying, but now I've settled into the style and accepted it for what it is I am liking it and finding it quite amusing in places.

A Wrinkle in Time is on my TBR list this year, so I look forward to seeing your thoughts on that one! :)

  12. Great planning of your TBR, ashleighjane :smile2: When my TBR was over 100 books, I used to plan the order of them so that I knew what I had coming up, and mixed up the different genres and non-fiction and found it really helped me stick to my challenge to read them all before buying any new books. Good luck with your 2013 reading!

Lol, my TBR is definitely over 100  I don't usually read non-fiction, but I did throw a couple into this years list. I'm hoping this list stops me from buying new books too. thank you! :)

    That's wonderful. :)

I've always loved The Famous Five

This is one of my favourite books

I hope you enjoy it too. :)

I enjoy reading The Famous Five books since they're nice short and easy reads that don't require much brain power. I also plan on re-reading Blyton's Naughtiest School Girl series at some point too.

I have no idea what Uncle Tom's Cabin is about, but I've seen it mentioned/referenced quite a few times, so I guessed it was about time I read it. :P

  13. I too will be interested to see how having your months planned out goes! I couldn't do that simply because my interests change often on a weekly or daily basis - I might be really excited about reading one book and then suddenly I discover another title I simply can't ignore (Thirteen Reasons Why is a good example of this - I only heard the title today but I plan to get it and read it asap!)

As for A Wrinkle In Time, it's a very good book, a little strange, and if I recall, considered slightly preachy in religious allegory. I was a very unreligious child the last time I read it, though, so I barely remember that aspect at all. I might re-read it myself this year!

I keep discovering new books that I want to read too. Mostly through book-tubers (which is how I discovered 13 reasons) I'm hoping that having a structured list will stop me from buying more books, because I have enough to read as it is. :P Plus spending money=bad ;) So no more watching book-tubers for me. :angel_not:

I'm looking forward to reading A Wrinkle in Time. I don't really notice religious themes much, unless they're blatantly stated :P Maybe this is because I'm not religious myself.
